I used the previous version of the iPad app to view newspaper replicas and to read the news articles Overall that version was fine However with the new update everything is behind a pay wall While I understand the desire to recoup costs this app is now 100 useless to nonsubscribers This makes little sense to me since I can just go to the website and see the same content Overall unless you are a subscriber with a paid digital subscription and login account there no reason to download this app     Was goodnow useless Must be paid digital subscriber with login
Horrible App Very deceiving No useable without purchase I even tried to purchase the in app subscription and that did not work either I have been a daily reader of the statesman with the old app I will find another news source for Austin news     Horrible App
Totally agree with the rest of the poor reviews Newspaper has failed to load for the last two days There is no way to get back to the home page from the archives For the subscription price I expect much better The only reason This is getting 1 star is there is no option for zero     Very poor
In the time it takes to load and navigate this slow and cumbersome version of the statesman I could walk to the store buy a print version read it and line the hamster cage Statesman just look at all the many good apps that other publishers are using and get one from the developer Why reinvent the wheel with a stone     Dont use it Stick wpaper
The option to subscribe to iPad content with an iTunes subscription does not work     ITunes subscription doesnt work
I even bought a subscription and the app still didnt work When I called their customer support they said Oh you should just use the mobile web version Then why have an app in the first place What an embarrassment Whoever the Cox Media Group is should be banned from the app store     Ridiculous
No good Does not load properly for viewing offline While offline articles open with more and more space between paragraphs until nothing is left but space Cant tell if articles load all the way or if material is missing especially towards the end Cant recommend at all     Austin Statesman
I have tried several times unsuccessfully to subscribe This inept newspaper must be a product of the State Legislature     Nonfunctional App
An absolute disaster For Austin News switch to one of the local tv apps Much better content design and functionality     This is Why ITunes Needs a Zero Rating
Cannot get to current days paper without powering down the iPad Also there are annoying add blocks between some of the pages of the paper Need to remove these        Needs work
No need in repeating what has already been written I deleted this app for pretty much all the same reasons that youll read in the other reviews Bad move StatesmanCox     Im out
The update claims it fixes in app purchase support but that is still broken This app just plain does not work     Still unusable
It took these guys months to figure out how to get it working with Apple subscriptions Now that is working and I have subscribed for the last few months The price seems fairly reasonable but The app regularly loses track of my subscription which I then have to restore Next it occasionally loses the button for getting back toTodays paper home page at which point youre stuck on yesterdays paper with no way out The button to previous editions never has todays edition in it at best offering everything up to about three days ago Next often when scrolling through an article the characters at the edge of the column get garbled which sometimes corrects itself and sometimes doesnt until you get out and come back into it Finally as best as I can tell the authors of this app dont really care having never responded to any of these issues These people need to decide whether they really want to be in this business So far I dont think they deserve to be I would rate this a Zero if I could     Embarrassingly bad
Useless without subscription     Not much news
This was a great app when it was free For 999 a month it is not worth it I will get my news elsewhere     Was a good app
AAS You ought to be ashamed to even offer this app much less charge for it Works infrequently     Worthless
Typical Austin the legend is better then reality When the app worked it included old articles and didnt update with all new articles from that days news Now it wont stay open or load any articles I tried to uninstall and reinstall to no avail It was never worth the 10 per month nor could you prepay for six months to a year but only month to month and now I am canceling     Bad App
I bought it a few weeks ago Will be canceling The stories dont update and are limited Not the same as what is available on the website I already emailed customer service and they stated it was a system issue which had been corrected A week later it still had not     Not updating not worth it
Wow this app is terribleearlier on they gave a few peek and is was finewhy did they change it when they charged for it someone help them     BAD PRESS
Just deleted this app since it now requires Facebook or a subscription to the Statesman to use the app And the Facebook sign on doesnt even work properly When will they ever learn that you cant take away what was once free Colossal fail     Cant take away what was once free
So disappointed Im not fortunate enough to live in Austin but visit often Ive been reading online every day for five years Im not sure the NEW version is better or worth the price I would suggest a one week free trial to see if you like it enough to subscribe     Seriously
Please fix this app As others have mentioned the app crashes frequently particularly when I try to use the download articles feature to look at the actual paper on my iPad I have emailed support a number of times since the app was released but have received no response to date        Frequent failure
Terrible Barely functional on its best days Pages frequently fail to load Often cant exit an article Failure     Mr
Almost impossible to access Have called multiple times and spent hours trying to get access Over last month been only able to access a couple of times This App is a horrible embarrassment for the Statesman Either fix it or get rid of it Im calling Monday to Stop all Statesman products Only gave one star because Required to do so     Horrible App
What a bummer that the statesmanwhich used to be free has decided to screw over its readers by making you to get a paid subscription to their appwell hopefully their sales go down due to the unhappiness of all of us in Austin that refuse to renew or even get a subscriptionand whats really more ironic of the wanting for me to buy a subscription is are they really a noteworthy and good source of information in my opinion not so much     Its all about money and subscription
Cox and the rest of the old media companies should fold This app is an example of what is wrong with their business model Any advertiser paying Cox for ads in this app is wasting their money As a print paper the Statesman is mostly useful for lining bird cages Crippling the iPad version with a pay wall does not help The old app was the only way I would ever read the Statesman Guess ill never read it now     Dont bother
Everyone else has said it you cant access anything without a subscription Sooooo disappointed     Paying for it Really
Subscription app now instead of the old great free app Its off my iPad     Delete
Requires a paid subscription now     Requires a paid subscription
Will review on the website basically their content is pretty crappy I wouldnt pay for the paper in print nor will I allow it to use my storage Bye bye AAS     app AAS not worth it
Come on this is not even a reasonable effort No wonder Cox Media Group is inadequate to report the news     Amateurish
Looks like the Statesman will not be around for so much longer A subscription model is fine but then it needs to be easy to purchase content valuable and an app which works and is useful One should think with that many smart minds around here in Austin that the Statesman could hire an exec who knows how the newnew economy actually works The app appears to be the last desperate move of a dinosaur Too sad     Extinction of the Dinosaurs
Ill just skim the website headlines from now on Not worth the price     Waste of time
The subscription is too much money I only care about local and regional news the national and international news comes from other sources If your going to charge charge only for your content and perhaps have levels of coverage I dont see a 10 dollar value for local news that I can get from twitter and local free papers like the Austin chronicle When you get to 5 dollars or less let me know     Too expensive
Several reviewers are upset about the requirement to purchase a subscription to access the full text of articles As a longtime subscriber of the Statesman I am terribly disappointed that the print version is no longer available on my iPad via this new app or if it is the user interface is so poor that I cannot find it The previous app was much better     A downgrade
Buy the app and then pay to log in No thank you Not worth the hassle of the login routine let have having to pay again after negotiating getting in Nope Sorry I wasted the money to buy the app This is the kind of service that keeps me from even remembering there is a local paper any more Byebye Austin American Staresman     Impossible login
Update Oct 2014 I am still waiting for any kind of improvement It has been a year and there have been no revisions Hey how about this go look at the Dallas Morning News ap because it is pretty good it just doesnt cover all of the Austin things I want to see It is also in the Newstand portion of ipad environment instead of a separate ap Seems like a reasonable place to put a newspaper ap to me Original review This ap was soooo badly reviewed in the past that I have no confidence that it could be useful now I WANT it to be good But I just dont want to spend even 1 month of a subscription to find out they got it wrong again It is not just the Austin paper Look at all of the Cox Media apps and you see the same bad reviews all over the country The web based version of the Austin paper that was introduced a few months ago didnt seem to be user friendly to me either so I am just not confident in this upgrade Nothing Cox has implemented in a digital format in the past year makes me want I try 10 just to see I want it to be good I like keeping track of my own town and I would prefer the iPad version over the paper or old Kindle versions I will return here often and I hope to find a good review sooner than later     Waiting for someone else to try it first
Im already frustrated by the fact that Im actually paying for this unstable app that crashes constantly but now I have to log in daily to use it Seriously If this doesnt improve I am canceling my subscription     Please fix this crappy app
The free beta app morphed into a paid app I just tried to find out what it would cost but the blue subscribe buttons dont appear to do anything When I went to the App Store and found out it was 995mo it seems too expensive The San Antonio ExpressNews and the Houston Chronicle are 599mo even less for an annual subscription These are larger closeby larger cities and the apps user interfaces are much better     Not ready for prime time
Used to be a good free content news app for the Austin area Now it is completely useless You have to subscribe now just to read any content Deleted it Suggest you dont waste your time     Terrible waste of a formerly good app
The app has changed It now requires a paid subscription but the app does not let you know what the paid subscription will cost Clicking anywhere in the app requires you sign in and pay for content including the article explaining the changes to the app This is unusable and I will be switching to using my web browser for the same content     impossible to use Requires a subscription
Constantly locked out Daily calls to customer service get it fixed for a few hours then locked out again Worst app Ive ever used period     Terrible
Dont do it The print edition will be gone This is a major update not a minor bug fix Shame on you Statesman Keep your old app until it no longer works The new subscription app Todays News is not a viable alternative either too fuzzy to read If the Statesman loses enough subscribers they will be forced to join the 21st century and publish an app worthy of a tech Austin     Deceitful update
Hard to upgrade if in app purchase doesnt work     In App Purchase Doesnt Work
As always the Statesman never fails to insult or frustrate me Yet again theyve screwed up a perfectly good opportunity to lure me into purchasing something from them I will delete the app and never again read this liberal rag 999 a month Really     Frustrated
Sorry Austin American Statesman but theres no way I will pay for a home delivery subscription in the hopes that this digital version is worth using Your false front is deceitful and a lie even the Wall Street Journal and New York Times apps give readers access to SOME content without requiring a paid subscription Your silly popup requiring a subscription login ANY time an article is tapped for reading is enough to merit removing your poorlyconcealed money grab app from my iPad There are plenty of other news sources out there that DONT charge me anything and quite honestly the überliberal slant in your news stories isnt worth my time or attention And Im not really interested in anything going on in Austin so your app is now buried along with a thousand other triedanddiscarded apps in my library When you decide to allow access to content WITHOUT requiring a login I may come back But even that is doubtful now Youre just not good enough to spend my time on     Removed from iPad
Appears to be a workinprogress still           Statesman eedition
I cancelled my newspaper thinking this was going to stay free with easy access but it didnt It also crashes a lot PLEASE go back to the old statesman     no good
The in app purchase button does nothing when clicked     In App Purchase Broken
I cant get access to my paid 15 year subscription despite trying for months The folks on support are about as bad as any in the business Cant recommend this app because I cant get access to the content I paid for Really really frustrating     Trying for months to get access
