Coming from a network that has made its recent fortunes on the backs of reality television I wasn t exactly expecting much depth from The Civil War Today While there are some areas that need polish the content this app provides is breathtaking in scope For every day of the civil war nearly 1500 days this app provides you with an article describing the events of that particular day from the perspective of citizens of the times You also get letters and diary entries recorded for each day Every other day or so brings a secondary article that gives additional context There are also plenty of photos and relevant maps for each day although these are often very slow to load The net result is an app that does a great job giving you a feel of how the Civil War unfolded from the perspective of those that lived through it                     Surprising Masterpiece Twaz77

The content is amazing and ever changing My only complaint is how the app was programmed to draw maps and photos and to redraw them when zoomed in When zooming in on the very high resolution maps it feels like the app is trying to redraw the entire map even the parts that are outside of the viewable area which takes forever It often then crashes mid redraw             Great App but oaj1977

This app was such fun at first It was a bit buggy but manageable Over time it has become intolerable I am using an iPad air with all the latest bells and whistles and I can t run this app at all It can t load photos or maps constantly crashes It can t load the newspapers at all I gave up trying them completely It doesn t keep track of where I am in reading it and having to hunt up my place every time is really annoying I have written to customer support multiple times and never gotten any response other an automated message saying that the ticket has been closed No reference to what ticket nor to what was done about my complaint and no sign of any fixes So I have to agree with the recent reviews I saw DO NOT PAY ANYTHING FOR THIS APP And remember the name BOTTLE ROCKET because they obviously have no interest in the apps they put out They aren t all that to begin with and they do nothing to support them My latest theory is that one needs an old iOS in order to get what little function one can from this idiot app I am looking at an iPad One in hopes of finding something to finish out the war Why is it I have to go to such lengths It s very sad Such awesome potential such a great idea     A crying shame Vanyel^

Another update given that the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War is less than a year away now the chances of this app ever being fixed are close to nil Therefore I suggest everyone who has felt the frustration of trying to use this broken app remember who developed it Bottle Rocket I for one will never buy another app developed by Bottle Rocket They just don t stand behind their product I hope others will join me in telling them this and in sharing that opinion here in the ratings Update Crashing and failure to load content images in particular are as bad as ever And now some content is stuck on Jan 31 1864 This app is clearly no longer being curated by its producers I suspect some server somewhere was loaded with content three years ago and nobody has checked it since Emails to support go unanswered I would advise anyone who has not yet bought it to avoid it Lowering original rating of three stars down to one Original review As others have noted there is much repetition with the supplementary material Quiz questions are repeated and a few border on irrelevant or silly I enjoy the images and maps but they often crash my iPad which is new and sports 64 gigs Most annoying feature I got this some time back and have been trying to catch up The app almost always open to the current date minus 150 years so I have to scroll back through a year worth of entries to find my location It also often jumps up to the current date when I m reading many months back This app needs a better bookmarking system AND a go to date function If there already is one I sure haven t found it yet     Good app could have been great Dr. Quahog

So much promise so much potential Although there is much to appreciate about this app any daily chronicle of America s epic conflict will inevitably seduce those possessing either intense or merely passing interest it ultimately fails to deliver what it could have and should have A quick summary of criticisms Contemporary newspapers are a fascinating read Why are they disproportionately Ohio publications Biographies of notable Civil War personalities are woefully inadequate Thank goodness for the female Confederate diarists and John Beauchamp Jones I m sure there must be more from Bartlett Yancey Malone than some variation of it raned agin today jotted down every six weeks or so Photos and battle maps are decent but they often appear randomly bearing little relationship to chronological subject matter Crashes have become constant and intolerable I will try the app reinstallation which another reviewer suggests             Promise Unfulfilled Jer47 55

Be aware that some of the diaries are edited I have read several original copies of the diarists and the app has not presented some of the entries I have reported the omissions and received a reply that included a ticket tracking feature It was a dead end Clearly the site has been neglected and is no longer helpful Now I am questioning the whole presentation In particular the diary entries of Bartlett Yancey Malone are missing for over a month He is the only soldier who was a POW from Nov 1963 until Feb 1865 An unedited copy of his diary was published by the University of North Carolina and can be found by an internet search The diary of Louise Wigfall Wright has not been faithfully reported either I am looking at others I have read to see how accurate they are being presented Disappointing for an app I had hoped was a faithful reflection         Don t Depend on this app for accuracy Tayshas

I ve seen the reviews about crashes etc but users need to update your apps I ve experienced problems with crashing etc but this at times has been related to my individual iPad settings I find the best thing to do is to delete and reinstall the app you re not charged again this along with regular updates appear to keep the app running smoothly There were problems with text formatting but these appear to have been fixed I get daily updates and even though feature stories and photo galleries run for multiple days the content is more relevant and timely than it used to be when there was just more of it                 You need to update and reinstall Pjoe Daddy
