The app that Fast Company says "rescues long-form journalism," and the Huffington Post calls "a model of concision and elegance." The Atavist offers a new kind of nonfiction storytelling and narrative nonfiction, with a series ...
I think these guys figured out what the iPad was made for Great app Sure I wish the content was free but I wish coffee and beer were free too                 Finally
I gave this a chance and love it Its a good way to get more details on a subject rather than whats in short magazine articles while not needing to invest the hours to read details that are just filler from my perspective of enjoyment of the book With this sort of reading I feel its more a breath than depth experience Ill certainly be selective in what I download it can certainly add up to some significant              The Best Mid Range
Excellent app The way all iPad apps should be A truly revolutionary way of telling short reallife stories It uses video sound photos references and more to make the text multidimensional and immensely rich The audiobook function is also great Some of the early negative reviews focusing on technical aspects do not hold true now All technical problems have been solved Download it buy any story and check it out for yourself You will love it                 One of the greatest apps ever
So far the Atavist is the only paid app I have on my iPad Its a great app for fans of long form journalism Ive only read Lifted so far because there is no subscription plan Ill have to pick and choose the storied that interest me most Just a note on an error in the Lifted audio book in chapter 15 the narrator repeats The transcripts of the taps of their social phones twice                 Seamless app
This is one of the most amazing Apps I have seen to date This sets the bar for all the other News and Book apps Actually it probably sets the bar way too high for anybody else I cannot wait to readhear both of the stories and to see the next set of stories Talk about getting into a book words video maps voice and behind the scenes information WOW Thanks Avatist                 Atavist means OMG
The app is flakey It takes a looooonnnnnggggg time to launch and gives 56 Internet connection errors despite the fact that other apps running at the same time have no trouble with the Internet I ended up having to remove it and reinstall it And why is it giving multiple errors on launch instead f giving one and exiting if a retry fails           Content 5 App 2
Im really enjoying the author reading the story but the auto scroll is too fast The text is over a paragraph ahead of her voice Very distracting           Auto scrolling issue
The authors tell excellent riveting stories of events about which i knew nothing Atavist is highly recommended                 Excellent short stories
Couldnt be happier with the magazine service                 Great Format and Excellent Content
finally a great literary app with all the information at your fingertips and audio when you need it fantastic                 one word fantastic
Love Atavist Magazine And the app lets me read it on my iPhone anywhere with no loss of quality                 great publication
Atavist is not your typical ebook app they have some pretty unusual books in their library that you can experience in a certain way only through this app though their books might be available on kindle nook etc those platforms might only have the more static versions of the books Some of Atavists books are actually totally interactive with music animation etc definitely a bit outside the box Totally recommend a try                 Awesome for books
Incredible If you love reading this app is the best thats come along                 Heard it on Slates Gabfest Podcast
I looked at this application to see how far the Book 20 format had come along The technology was the biggest disappointment For example the audio for one of the 19 chapters loaded but the audio for the rest did not and it is days later Selecting the video for chapter 2 likewise still leads to a still downloading message This feature was not important to me but the point is that the app does not appear to be working as advertised I do not recommend this application for those who are visually impaired or who wish to use the audio feature i wrote to the company and have not received any response     Use Kindle instead if you have WiFi only on your iPad
Big fan of the app and stories they publish I always feel like Im reading a story that I cant imagine being published anywhere else Well worth the subscription price I also like that they continue to update older stories                 Great reads
Not convinced the features are better than an ebook formatno bookmark           Love the content
I love this app Perfect blend of compelling multimedia elements and engaging non fiction reportage Cant wait until the next story comes out                 Great idea wonderfully executed
Some of the best storytelling out there backed up by an innovative and easy to use technology I love The Atavist                 Excellent content and technology
Smart wellcrafted app that delivers good content              Smart
I downloaded this to listen to Sleep Donation as an audiobook The audio keeps jumping to the publishers notes after each chapter ends I cant scroll the text to read along with the audio and the headphone controls do not control the app meaning I have difficulty using other apps at the same time Although this does mean I could play music AND listen to the jumpy outoforder audiobook at once Combine this with the novellas repetitively named chapters and you get a disorienting frustrating experience        Buggy
The content of this app is great The stories are wellwritten and riveting However the app itself isnt great After the latest update I kept getting an error saying that I had to have an Internet connection to open the app I ended up having to delete and reinstall the app to get it to work Also it would be nice if you could sort articles or view them in list view as opposed to the squares              Great stuff
I have enjoyed all the articles Ive downloaded and like the length and subject matter Perfect                 Terrific
Amazing stories great app                 Great
I absolutely love this app I bought it this morning and have bought all available stories How fun to be able to just get these amazing interesting stories a la carte like this I would probably have to subscribe to 10 magazines to get even three stories that I found as interesting as these and now its all in one place and I can just read it as I want I love that its also available for Kindle and I can get the stories in both places Love love love this app                 For the price of a latte fantastic quality stories
Unlike the current trend such as The Daily where the technology and flash of an app overwhelm the substance when there is some I appreciate The Atavists use of technology to support and enrich the words and story rather than attempt to draw attention from it At this point Ive only read the Piano Demon but based upon that work I am looking forward to future readings There was depth and interest to the reporting and the use of music by the subject of the story was a wonderful gift To those that feel that 299 is too much to pay for a well written well researched piece of journalism I suspect nothing will change your minds For those that feel that it is reasonable to pay for quality Id suggest you take a look                 Technology subservient to text as it should be
Topflight reporting and editing Fascinating stories Great interface design                 Outstanding
The in app purchase price for individual stories seems very reasonable however there is no option to not download the sound That means the downloads are very large and may cause problems for those who have bandwidth limits imposed by their ISP I had to delete the app due to this and never got the story downloaded Atavist support did offer a refund but I declined since it is not really their problem           Warning
Beautiful layout great stories What else is there                 Really great
First its gorgeous I love the design so elegant Second the writing is excellent and the subjects are fascinating I cant wait for the next edition Third it satisfies the moments when you want something more a photo a map etc One problem Im spoiled now I want all my non fiction reading to come with a soundtrack I dont mind the price at all The articles are substantial as is the multimedia element HKD                 This app is astounding
So I paid for an article and briefly looked through it When I tried to open it later it says I have to buy it again My account shows that I have been charged but when I hit report a problem it just opens link to the apple website If they are going to charge 299 for an article i expect to have access to it Very dissapointing     Content not delivered
The design of the app is very nice but I agree with everybody else that 299 for one story is way too much Maybe a yearly subscription for say 799 would be a better idea Also an option to NOT download the Audio version of the story would really speed up the lengthy download I like the story Lifted its a great story but the writing feels a little rushed I would like more detail As it stands the length of the story is about New Yorker length It needs to be longer to justify me having to pay for it I think the app and the ideas behind it are very good but it still needs tweaking Also more multimedia elements would justify the high price           Interesting
Ive bought the three stories and no new content since then If you are going to survive you need to put up fresh content           Cmon content
They got my attention with Lifted and now Im looking for more but the very limited content and price of each story make this out of reach to most casual readers Maybe a few years ago this would work but now with so much content available for free and in podcasts seems like they are really attracting a very limited audience Limited content high prices 3 stars           Good but expensive
The concept is awesome Brilliantly done and the multimedia elements are very professional The downside is that people might not want to pay for the quality In the app world people grumble about paying over a couple of dollars for an appyet this is 299 a story Personally I would pay for quality like this but I dont think many people would especially when you can download a full book for a few dollars more Kudos for creating something that is intelligent well produced and meaningful Some of us will pay for this type of media but I suspect your audience will be smaller and more select than most              Good but pricey
I thought it would read the story to me     Useless
The layout is amazing I will give them that However why would I pay for each story I thought journalism was about news and not an avenue for someone to sell their nonfiction to the public I say the app should not be listed in the news category Dont get me wrong I have no problem with authors making money fiction or nonfiction This app has not been marketed as such it has been marketed as the savior of journalism and as a news app Sorry one use then it was deleted immediately     Saving journalism Really
The Atavist is truly a superb app Perfectly suited to iOS The Atavist boasts well thought out and intriguing articles with a slick fast and modern UI Using it is simply a dream and the built in images short bios map integration and other small features help bring out the best in each story I recommend this app wholeheartedly to all those who still love long form journalism I can promise you you wont be disappointed                 Fantastic
This app is a wasted effort I cant imagine a lot of people would use this There is hardly any control over the display of the text besides font size but line spacing is uncomfortably tight The app also loaded an animation for the ebook cover at a snails pace and later crashed when I was trying to increase the font size The app also wont let me tap words to get definitions or highlight text which is my main reason for preferring ebooks over paper books Im annoyed they are forcing me to use this junk instead of giving me an ePub or PDF that I could open in whatever app I want     App is a wasted effort
If this is the future wed better learn to be patient        New content please
Frequent problems when using many of the features within stories that end up closing the program Ive stopped clicking on the links When they work they add to the text but it isnt worth the hassle           Great stories BUT
This is an app with a ton of potential The platform is slick elegant and very well designed I read the Piano Demon and really enjoyed it Reading the story with the multimedia interaction is great and it seems like something that will only become more robust as more stories are released The price per story is a bit on the high side it wont stop me from buying them as long as the quality remains high but it will probably keep me from every story released Cant wait to read more                 Great multimedia story telling
Great writing Conde Nast should use this format particularly for the New Yorker The cost per story means you need to consider carefully before purchasing each piece but thats not such a bad thing Thinking about what else I might spend the money on I enjoy a good piece writing plus photos etc more than a similarlypriced drink at a coffee shop Definitely interested in seeing where this goes                 Beautiful Format
The Atavist is terrific app a tad slow but worth it Content is marvelous and I enjoy the option of listening to the story in the authors voice music nicely compliments the piece also Worth noting that I ended up here via Lonform                 Love
Atavist gets loads of cool points for offering interactive stories that are ideal for the iPad format Unfortunately theres only a handful of stories and theres a 3 price tag attached to each one                 Major cool points
The download process is nightmarishly slow What good is solid content if you cant get it           Yikes
It would be nice to be able to subscribe to stories and can be a bit slow but it is a great example of new media documentary                 Great app with solid innovative story telling
Excellent content the app is pretty nice to use There does seem to be a unexpected crash on closing story issue with my ipad air and the current version though hence 4 not 5 stars Overall The top sub I consider a bargain for the great writing and interesting presentation              Great writing interesting presentation goodnotsuper app wrapping it
The pause button on the audio book does not work This is a great idea and while I agree with the concept of paying for quality and dont think 299 is too much for 1 story Im still on the fence about whether I will actually buy something I think five stories for 299 is something I would be more prone to buy              nicely done
I never would have imagined an audiobookebook hybrid to be so compelling Of course a significant part of that has to do with the high quality of writing and compelling stories This is seamless and engaging experience                 This format is a revelation
Exceptional reading experience for the cost Highly recommended to those who read and those who should                 Great App
