As a 2012 thru hiker on the AT I was eager to download this app Sadly in its current form the app is useless to me It is completely unresponsive taking 3 minutes to show me the main map The buttons have a minute delay when I press them I have yet to be able to use this app and it was expensive I am sad about this as I was anticipating this app for awhile It needs major optimization and streamlining I would suggest the ability to turn off states so only the state you are in shows up Or even the ability to turn off all other POIs water sources shelter locations etc for a specific amount of miles ahead The app seems to be loading up the entire trail and every point of interest at once It eventually crashes my iPhone I am hiking the Eastern Continental Trail for the next year starting in September and I was hoping to use this app to gauge its quality while doing the AT section of the ECT I hope for major tweaks to the app Unresponsive to the point of being useless
So I couldnt resist and downloaded this app thinking the screen shots looked awesome the book itself is awesome ergo the app should be awesome Maybe it is and I just dont understand how to use it however from my current location I would expect I could select any available waypoint and see the map for that section nope For example Im in PA now but I want to see what the trail looks like starting at springer I select springer mtn and all I get is a black screen with a back button in the upper left corner Tried several locations with the same result I feel like I just wasted 2000 and wish I could get my money back In paper looks nicer than guthooks apps but in practice at least right now guthooks wins hands down Very disappointed BTW although is says its for the iPad as well it doesnt seem to be Did a search from the iPad for this app after I downloaded to the iPhone 5 and its nowhere to be found And no clear instructions so although it seems like it would be intuitive something is missing Super disappointing to see such a poorly created app to be affiliated with such a good paper reference First impression not intuitive buggy
The app was useful for the first 100 Im at mile 273 Hot Springs and can no longer use the app because it takes so much time to scroll to my mileage The most ideal solution is to have the app automatically scroll to the destination closest to me If this is not possible a scroll to mile would be useful By mile 400 Im going to throw my phone off a cliff if I have to keep scrolling to find the next watershelterpoi Distances relative to your location are only given in bird miles not trail miles Town info isnt loaded in the app so you must have the book anyway It is nothing like Halfmiles app is on the PCT You must also buy the book
I just bought the app yesterday as a Christmas gift to myself It takes a long time to load and when it does I cant do anything with it Once I got it to open to show me a list of shelters and a list of water sources but when I clicked on a shelter it went to a new screen with no information Im not going to waste a lot of time trying to get the app to work Save yourself 20 and buy something else Wish Id read the reviews first
