Storyist is a powerful writing environment for iPad that lets you create, review, and revise your work wherever inspiration strikes. With Storyist, you can: Produce submission-ready manuscripts and screenplays. Storyist provides a rich text editor with ...
This app is great for distraction free writing and its plethora of features would be great if they were actually available and or easy to find and use Also it s not at all easy to turn your draft into a file that can be uploaded or even shared elsewhere on an iPad The website claims the app has features that it either doesn t have or are not able to be found easily It worked for me writing my first novel but I m looking for a different app before I write my second             Needs improvement paigeereviews0001
Whether you re compiling a Ph D dissertation in any subject but chemistry worked for me or if you re trying to find a word processing application that isn t as awful as Word or as bland as Google Docs similar software of that ilk Storyist has your back and will not disappoint you It s not perhaps as ubiquitous as say Scrivener when it comes to an endless maze of menu options in the user interface allowing you to get lost with a gaudy amount of features that are only really used for a portion of actual screenwriters novelists I admit that much Scrivener is a powerful beast that is very useful for the hyper organized read Irrationally OCD addled writers where every single punctuation mark needs to be organized on index cards filed by color coding one page of compiled text is converted from the drawing board interface that sequesters you into a maze of sub folders character profiles etc Which isn t a bad thing it s a different thing So what about the other competition here How does Storyist measure up to its fellow iOS story based creative writing apps It actually blows most of them out of the water Fade In Mobile HAHAHA Sorry I had to list it because it does share a market with these kinds of apps but oh my it is far from being worth your time even the free read 99 useless without the eventual in app upgrade purchase version is kind of a big insult A yawn inducing what did I just buy experience we all have been through at least once before Final Draft This is difficult for me to say but Final Draft has actually done the impossible over recent releases years It used to be the massively overpriced desktop software ex Every single desktop app released by Omni Group where you always wondered how they had the nerve to charge so much for a stripped down version of Microsoft Word that had a feature or two that suggested it was all about screenwriting and storytelling but in truth it only LOOKED the part and it lacked features I talked about above w respect to Scrivener like world building character profiles and that jazz It thought having Outline Mode was some genius idea when it was something we ve been using since the first version of Word or Apple s Pages were released HOWEVER recently Final Draft has stepped its game up I d say it s currently a 3 star app so inferior to Storyist but maybe in a year they ll continue to improve and make things interesting We ll see Scrivener Pretty much the only app I d choose over Storyist IF I HAD TO PICK ONLY ONE I m sorry Storyist Scrivener just GETS me you know But can we still be friends 5 star app but personally I ve been using Storyist more and more in recent months which is mainly due to not needing the onslaught of options Scrivener throws at you every time you type a new word So it comes down to how OCD you like your digitally composed files to be Like no one is going to ever see or admire how impressive your digital drawing board w a million pixel pins pixel yarn threads connecting an FBI case that s we see mapped out in TV and movies Or rather every time Carey Matheson on HOMELAND goes off her meds but is still able to manically put the terrorist conspiracy together while Saul spends 3 days trying to call her to say they already cracked the case or caught the bad guy while she was being meticulous and for what It s fun to make your storyboard and project files look so codified so neat and easily accessible should you need to find a specific comma you used somewhere between pages 135 and 637 but at the end of the day your final compiled story is what will matter Don t be Carey Matheson She s super annoying when she does that whole off the grid but connecting dots with yarn routine Like how does a mother even have time for that They don t they just don t Mellel Only on iPad as of now right but an iOS writing app all the same One with a brute force desktop companion that has been a powerhouse for years always under the radar and out of sight for reasons I cannot explain This should be as popular or more than Fade In and Final Draft yet it s never really become a well known product Hopefully that changes soon They just released a new macOS version v4 a long anticipated release after v3 spent years and years useful yet outdated in some respects The iPad version for Mellel is solid it it s the anti Scrivener somehow It s a game you play One called Try to find the menus and options and features the developers hid them REALLY well and you might rage quit before finding any icon other than the ones for new document select undo redo I ve played for like over 100 hours on this guys and just before I gave up I finally figured out how to change the font type and document settings but I m not telling you I had to work for it so it s only fair you do too For being agonizingly minimalistic for aesthetic reasons I give this one 3 5 stars But how easily this one could be in the 4 5 5 0 range if they would just SHOW ME HOW TO DO OTHER THINGS okay I m over it BOTTOM LINE THIS APP IS WORTH IT SCRIVENER IS ALSO WORTH IT THE OTHERS EVEN THE ONES I DIDN T MENTION ARE INFERIOR PRODUCTS DO THE WRITE THING See what I did there With the pun Okay fine I ll stop So moody Overall the app is wonderful The first complaint I have is that you can t open your files on the iPad version of the app which then locks up and crashes later Pleas fix this ASAP Another issue I see with this app is that the details for characters don t show up on iPhone That makes it next to useless for those without the Mac application or an iPad and the Mac version is expensive Please make the app the same on all versions     Details of characters don t show up on iPhone Reader1718
I love this app When I first decided I wanted to write a book I bought both Storyist and Scrivener for my Mac I just couldn t make up my mind When Storyist released the iPad version of their product I kind of let Scrivener fall by the wayside I love Storyist and what I really love is how it uses iCloud to sync between my Mac and my iPad As I use my iPad Pro more and more I find myself using it almost exclusively to write I m so thankful that Storyist is such a solid product on iPad I highly recommend it                     Great Writing App Michael Hansen
I love this app and I ve been using it on my MacBook Air so I know how effect it is I ve been hesitant on buying the iPad version because it didn t show a download option even though I already had a version of it I bought it just now as a test yes you still have to buy the iPad version If this can be fixed it would save others a lot of money                 Have the Mac app Too bad you still have to pay for the iPad app icantwait48
Storyist is really fun to use and designed with thought and skill The interface is just perfect and I love that the correct formatting is all explained in their excellent and easy instructions And the correct formatting is completely provided for our use in their templates although anyone who wants to can go in a different direction with no problem Also export options are plentiful I can t believe I m going to recommend this over the other main app out there but yup I like Storyist better It does more of the things that are meaningful to me and gives me a sense of security that s important to me That fear of doing something wrong has vanished This is the one                     really nice app Blue Pine
I had a manuscript on this app and now it s gone one day it was there and now you changed the look of the icon and my entire story is gone I m very upset because I put a lot of time and effort in this story     Storyist lost manuscript Lilac unicorn
I have used Storyist for years It keeps my manuscripts research and notes efficiently organized I love that it has the option to sync to iCloud I often begin writing on my Mac and finish on my iPad Storyist and iCloud let me switch between devices without fear of the dreaded version conflict I love coming back to my Mac and finding that my changes are there even if I hadn t saved Could Storyist use a new coat of paint Sure It s looking a bit dated next to Scrivener s new app but it does its job It does it well                 Storyist Works Beautifully mwjac
I used this to edit Scrivener files on my iPad for a while and it did that job but very poorly It changed formatting I couldn t copy and paste into it without losing italics Very haphazard It was the only game in town for a while but now that it s not I m never using it again         Not my favorite hsb1977
I anticipated I would be able to work on a Scrivener project on my Ipad and also be able to work on the same project on my airbook using Scrivener However after purchasing this and attempting it and reading about the attempts of a few others it appears this is not likely to work First you can only read in Scrivener files using iCloud because storyist cannot use the scrivener file format created by dropbox However storyist does not sync well with icloud The folder created to sync with icloud never appeared on my other devices The forums suggest this is a common problem Second it s not clear that storyist saves Scrivener files So you can t create a file on ios storyist and then save it to Scrivener You can import a Scrivener file but you can t sync it and you can t create a file and then save it to Scrivener Not really practical If I ever figure it out I ll update this     Not practical to use with Scrivener GLP Fan
Best writing app I ve found Pretty much has everything I need I switched syncing from Dropbox which was good to iCloud which is great The UI took a little getting used to but now it s my go to app on both iOS and OS X                     Best iOS app for novels Jelly o the month
This will be a nice product in near future As of now it is functional however annoying bugs keep me from viewing wildly favorably I am skeptical that the other reviewers put it through the paces             Works OK annesarbor
I was hoping to replace Final Draft with this but there are FDX formatting issues that need to be resolved For example if you have a character heading at the bottom of the page the app should automatically move it to the next page         Janizzary
I ve only used it to do the final edit on an OpEd and to write some notes for another but so far so good No negatives to date and this is the most bug free text editor I ve used in the iOS world I assume that s because it does a few things well rather than trying to do everything but I m still impressed that this seems to be the creation of a single individual Bravo                     Outstanding so far DonaldFRobertson
Sure there are things that this software doesn t do It s iOS so of course there are But it slaughters the competition for working with Scrivener files I resisted iCloud but I was fed up with a slow a Windows tablet not syncing properly on Scrivener shutdown with One Drive Apple and PC right Writing in RTF on the iPad arguing with all the formats I was ready to give up on portable productivity in Scrivener short of a real laptop or touch screen computer and the associated expense If you use Scrivener and own an iOS device buy this software Edit write move scenes around get things done Do the big things like compile on your desktop Do something besides fight with your environment on the go Fix a scene drop in some great overheard dialogue while your car gets inspected If you use Scrivener and are tired of waiting for vaporware buy this program                     Scriveners Rejoice Oldsynthguy
I have scrivener on my Mac but don t want it s complicated too many options set up In addition it is critical to have iPad and iPhone apps Nothing comes close to this app And help is received promptly Great app                     Solid sync and tools EugeniaB
I am a recovering Scrivener addict won over by Storyist I bought the app initially to have an iPad editor for Scrivener It works pretty well for that you just have to keep your projects in iCloud I don t have a problem with that Some do The advantage is I didn t have to horse around with external folder syncs etc I was actually working on the same file I began to play with creating native Storyist files and was intrigued enough to check out the OS X version It s great and has become my new preference To get the full functionality of the software you ll have to use Storyist files If you only want a Scrivener editor it works great for that too But you ll miss out on all the great outlining functions it has to offer                     A Noveler s Dream WritinFool
This app for ios Storyist is unusable on iOS It strips out ALL the Fountain comment text AND returns in the text imported from my new MAC PRO It also does not have password support AND cannot email an encrypted file Documentation is extremely poor     Strips out Fountain comments and blank lines no passwords no email encryption LaraCroft_NYC
I write as a hobby and for years I have used Scrivener on my Mac to put together short stories I have been waiting since 2014 for Scrivener s coming soon mobile application but I finally ran out of patience and decided to take Storyist for a spin Starting fresh with a whole new story not syncing existing projects with Scrivener Storyist works great It has all of the features I used most on Scrivener and it is very capable of being a Scrivener replacement for me I can t speak to how it does syncing with Scrivener or anything else but as a standalone tool it is wonderful I do most of my writing on my iPad these days anyway which means Storyist has become my primary software for organizing my ongoing project They say the best ability is availability and I am glad I decided to give Storyist a try                     Fantastic Tool for Long Form Fiction Writing Chaselife
I bought this because like everyone I want a scrivener mobile app that seamlessly syncs with the desktop version This promised that but does not deliver The Dropbox implementation is horrid Every time I open the app it tells me my Dropbox files were removed If I wait someone s they come back The interface is fine but not what I ve come to expect having worked with scrivener I particularly miss being able to simply tab between screenplay presets character to dialog to parenthetical etc I know those buttons are handy on the iPad but they re buried on the phone and that s what I need a mobile solution for Gave it a try for a couple of weeks and was thankful for the ability to export my work back to scrivener             Decent but not yet a Scrivener alternative pvino
Used storyist two years ago for nanowrimo without a hitch I do all the writing on my iPhone This year it has become unreliable The final Straw is it wouldn t save to Dropbox It thought my morning writings on my iPhone was from a different device and then it threw away my evening changes So I lost over 1200 words They also have a midges tire making it way too easy to accidentally delete scene notes They ve know about it for years they won t do anything about it Three strikes storyist your out     Was good now loses data font buy cheronti
This was a 5 star app even with its few annoying flaws Nothing s perfect but having just completed by first novel on the previous version I had been very happy with it Not anymore Fix the keyboard and the count thingy And get your 5 stars back Yes it s that annoying Oh and it would be nice to be able to export all the files in a story at once The the option to start a chapter with a different number than 1 would make that particular functionality actually useful             Latest release not so good CoxBingo
I moved to Storyist after getting tired of waiting for the fabled Scrivener iOS app Best move ever couldn t be happier Are you tired of waiting Well you don t have to be Join me It s better over here                     Former Scrivener User WritinFool
The Mac Storyist is the best thing to ever happen to writing This app Totally laughable It s supposed to sync via iCloud or Dropbox but does neither automatically you have to go in and reupload the file every time you edit it And if you want to keep a hard copy on your computer that stays updated don t even think about it This app doesn t even save my character sheets I can t remember how much I paid for this app but I want it back My advice to the developers would be to look at Apple s Pages to see how integration can truly be done for text editing     Biggest disappointment ever JaelValentine
I like the app a lot It s a good word processor I like the word count feature and the index cards The only problem I have encountered is that the app crashes when I try to insert a picture Something that would be great is if you could get the word count for a selection of text                 works well but Yume2102
This is a very powerful app i love that everything i write is available on both my iPhone and iPad anytime i need it It also has some powerful organization tools like index cards Its my favorite writing app so far and i love how they keep updating it Keep up the great work                     This is the most complete writing solution for the iPad wiidragon3
I started to use this app on my iPad with the intention of giving it a tryout and seeing if Storyist fit my mobile needs better than Scrivener which has no iOS version available yet I like this Storyist app Unfortunately I have since checked and discovered that there is no companion Windows version of Storyist and insofar as I can tell no hurry to produce one At least for me this is a deal breaker Develop a Windows version and I might give Storyist a second look It does look like a great app program if a user is strictly Mac             No Windows Version Try Again 2
Being able to work on a project on my desktop then add thoughts while I m at the store is fantastic There is a bit of a learning curve Details such as using Cmd Enter to double space do take a bit to figure out the documentation only covers broad explanations not in depth example workflows Overall I highly recommend it                     Perfect balance between ease of use and features Shupshe
i have two different ipads it s great to have them in sync storyist is BEST app for formatting according to industry standards                     cloud syncing Calculating excellence
Despite numerous attempts on my part to back up my project to a Dropbox account specifically for that purpose the program never performed the upload or touched the account despite having the necessary permission and credentials Come new version of the app and the project is gone I m going back to Pages because it syncs properly     This ate a story Mr. Joshua D.
It s a nire app One of the few things that would make it better would be a Multiple File Backup For instance say I have a multiple file project and I want to copy all of the files of that project as RTF files to DropBox currently I have to do them one at a time It would be nice to do them all at the same time                 Nice App Has a few problems though Lynx369
What I love about this app is the simplicity I ve tried several well known apps but the complexity and all the features I didn t use just got in the way There s nothing between my thoughts and the page on this app It writes easy I like the folders for organizing Even use Storyist for semi final drafts and then export to Word only for final submission format if needed I really dislike Word now                 Great for creating wonderactivist
Thus far Storyist has worked very well for me The icons may take a second or two to catch on but otherwise writing my scripts novels and short stories are a cinch I m still looking at buying Final Draft Writer which thus far has semi ok reviews from users I need to use FD Writer and see for myself before I render a verdict on it Personally speaking I had no trouble using this app                     Final Draft Watch Your Back narred67
Main irritation is that the word count is not easily accessible like the mac version is needs to be visible in some format in the outline view And a total wordcount at the to as well I did the demo on the mac so maybe that s my problem The interface seems a little more jumbled I m going to try it just on the iPad for a bit which is more mobile and with me all the time Kind of irritating that I had to pay for it to even try it out I ll force myself to use it but may switch to scrivener when that comes out if the interface doesn t become more like the mac os version             OK for basic writing cgmummy
I use Storyist every day on my desktop iPhone iPad No other software for writers does this as far as I know It syncs automatically now to the iCloud which means I can take my iPad with me to lunch and keep writing on the run It s perfect for my needs I wish that Apple would list it in the Apps for Writers section of the app store I give it a full thumbs up                     The best software for writers MichaelOneNow
This app is exactly what I have been waiting for for my iPad I love writing on my iPad it s so easy to keep with me at all times when I need to write and this app makes organizing my writing so much easier It s still missing some much needed features like word counts but hopefully the developers will address this soon It would also be nice to be able to export into Word and keep automatic sync with the Mac version of this software but in the mean time this is about as close to scrivener as you can find in the iPad Great job guys UPDATED iCloud syncing is amazing Now I can pick up my iPad to edit without missing a beat Hands down the best software for on the go writers who work across multiple devices                     This is what I ve been waiting for RobV8R
regularly updated a great tool for writers of all kinds                     Excellent App Appeltize
I switched from Scrivener to Storyist because of Storyist s IOS support and it s excellent iCloud integration I can work on the same file on my iPhone 6 my iPad and of course my Mac You need version 3 0 or better on both Mac and IOS to do that but it works great I often start writing on my Mac in the morning then move to my iPhone while traveling to work and then on iPad while eating lunch then back to my work Mac then to iPhone going home back to my home Mac ICloud keeps it all sync d and functionality between Mac and IOS devices is good enough that I never feel handicapped other than the limited keyboard on IOS Revisions and reviewing and tweaking are easy on IOS even if that s not the place to bang out a thousand new words The key is I can take advantage of small slices of time to work anywhere now That s awesome                     Excellent iCloud integration Johnamar
I just want to thank the developers for this last update specifically the automatic syncing I have long since had the app on both my iPad and my iPhone but I would always hesitate and talk myself out of writing on my phone for fear that I had not synced when last I wrote on the pad With this latest update that fear is GONE and my writing time has doubled as I can write fearlessly anywhere and anytime THANK YOU                     BEST UPDATE EVER callunakeep
Loved it at first But soon after I got it I noticed that I can t scroll down to read what I ve written on my phone version of the app It keeps popping back up to the top of the screen The cursor will move below visibility at the bottom of the screen and keep typing but I can t see what I m typing When I use my finger to scroll down and see it automatically bounces back to the top of the page This problem has been on two different phones on both my iPhone 5 and iPhone 6 So I spent all that money and can no longer use my phone to write more than a paragraph If this app worked on those very simple functions it would be worth rating it higher but I need to be able to see what I am writing or what s the point haha Very disappointed in that aspect Hope They either fix it or Apple grants me a refund         Problem Deadwood007
When I bought this app for iPad one of the key selling points is that I could use it across multiple devices iPad iPhone Mac What they don t tell you is that the app for Mac is an additional 59 99 For me that s a huge piece of the puzzle to leave out I now feel stuck in that if I want to use the app like I want I have to invest another 60 Maybe they should have added some assembly required in the description     Maybe It s Just Me TantrumChaser
regularly updated a great tool for writers of all kinds                 Excellent App
I love the features this app includes it has everything you need to write a screenplay JUST REMEMBER THIS IS MY FAVORITE SCREENWRITING APP FOR THE IPAD The good 1 YES IT HAS FDX support WHICH IS HUGE 2 extended keyboard makes switching from dialogue to scene heading to whatever easy 3 automatic formatting for example you write a character then press return and it automatically goes to dialogue Or if you start typing a character name or scene heading that youve already typed a bubble pops up with what it thinks youre typing and then all you have to do it either tap return and itll fill it in automatically or tap the character namescene heading that is in the bubble 4 title page file is automatically included in each project you create you just have to switch out the information provided with your actual information 5 Has story sheet file types these include character plot point setting scene sheet and section sheet Using these story sheets you can provide information that cant be as easilydirectly expressed through the screenplay 6 folders nough said 7 and my favorite the perfect amount of IMPORTINGEXPORTING OPTIONS 8 dropbox support BUT WITH EACH NEW FEATURE COMES PROBLEMS The bad 1 there is no tutorial theres a Getting Started project file This is frustrating because its in the way AND if you delete it you are out of luck if you get confused or lost 2 When you create a new project is included default files that you have to delete EVERYTIME you create a new project this is a good and bad feature because it makes things like writing a title page as easy as fill in the blank BUT I would very much so prefer a onoff button for each of the default files so that you dont have to delete the about this template file EVERY TIME YOU CREATE A NEW PROJECT 3 its difficult edit headers and footers 4 You cannot rename files while the file is open you have to edit it from the outside of the file by tapping the title The ugly 1 Notecards make 0 sense not that they are a stupid idea but I HATE that it creates notecards AUTOMATICALLY another feature I wish I could turn on and off the deleting a notecard removes the information that caused the app to create the notecard in the first place and by that I mean if you create a new scene then the app automatically creates a notecard if you delete said notecard then it deletes the ENTIRE SCENE Yet again anther feature I want to be optional 2 IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO DELETE STICKY NOTES This is a headache especially when you have some notecards full of relevant information and other with things like rewrite this paragraph or scene or dialogue or whatever Once youve rewritten whatever it was you wanted to rewrite THE ONLY WAY to not see that irrelevant sticky note is to turn off ALL your sticky notes this doesnt delete them it just makes them invisible 3 iPhone app is useless for screenwriters this is due to that fact that the extended keyboard doesnt include the same formatting options that make the IPad app so easy to use If you want a screenwriting app for your phone or iPod Id go with Fade In Its easy to use and gets out of your way Although it doesnt have as many features as Storyist                 Gr8 app for screenwriters got a lot of gr8 features but a good bit f annoyances too
nice app but the UI is in dire need of work for the iPhone 6 in draft mode the text is massive I mean like 36pt if you turn off draft mode the text is scaled to the page which is better but when you scroll up or down the page floats crazily so its not good for editing also they keyboards are way too big especially in landscape the keyboard occupies 23 of the screen so the writing experience is not great on the iPhone 6 I am sure it will be fixed soon with an update IMO the iPad functionality desperately needs to be added for iPhone 6 users in particular the extended keyboards otherwise looks like a fine app        UI needs work for iPhone 6
Storyist is a great app but its code does not allow the Zoom feature in IOS 8 to employ its Follow Focus function which would allow me and many other visually impaired writers to use this app comfortably Please please update Storyist to include support for Follow Focus so I can actually see what Im writing              Follow Focus
I started to use this app on my iPad with the intention of giving it a tryout and seeing if Storyist fit my mobile needs better than Scrivener which has no iOS version available yet I like this Storyist app Unfortunately I have since checked and discovered that there is no companion Windows version of Storyist and insofar as I can tell no hurry to produce one At least for me this is a dealbreaker Develop a Windows version and I might give Storyist a second look It does look like a great appprogramif a user is strictly Mac           No Windows Version
Its alright kinda confusing not worth ten dollars though        Ok
The idea behind Storyist is not new An allinone program allows the creative juices to flow without having to jump from app to app collating ideas into a finishing app Storyist offers the opportunity for the writer to break down their story to its basic components It manages this by offering easy to access and easy to create sections within each project Helpful tools include pages for character profiles a plot summary blank text pages for notes complete text and paragraph style functionality and even an images folder Like many allinone programs there is a tendency for some parts of the app to shine leaving other parts that dont live up to their potential The index card feature is a perfect example It is cumbersome and while integrated seems to function much differently than many much more intuitive and functional index card apps Inserting images into a document is an exercise in frustration It is as if Storyist treats images as one of the many text styles basic or custom I am not sure why one would want to include images in a novel manuscript or screenplay submission as it is highly irregular But the option is available if you can figure out how to make it work The most disappointing issue is text flow Storyist offers such advanced style sheet customization and extended keyboard functionality I was surprised to find that Storyist advances words in a sentence to the next line despite there being plenty of white space left on the previous line and no custom margin settings other than the standard left align Perhaps an example is best I will use a sentence demonstrating how most text editors would correctly handle a sentence Storyist could be a great application for writers Here is how Storyist might render the same sentence Storyist could be a great application for writers Notice how Storyist advances text to the next line when unnecessary Storyist handles sentence flow in this fashion far too often A manual solution to the problem is to perform a cut and paste operation placing the words where they should be thus fixing the irregular text flow anomaly Having to do this at least one time in nearly each paragraph is unacceptable UpdatesUpgrades Storyist responded with four updates in 2013 and none in 2014 It has now been nine months since the last update The bottom line If the rudimentary settings are not changed Storyist provides the writer templates to create properly formatted manuscripts for both novels and screenplays Many other apps do the same The extra ability to create a finished document with custom formatting provides the user with pagelayout functionality There are better page layout apps in which text flows properly images can be inserted scaled masked and to which text wrap settings can be applied My opinion Storyist is an almost great app for writing stories screenplays and novels For inspec novel manuscript or screenplay submissions Storyist functions best when you use the formatted templates and change nothing Having said that the style sheet options are among the best and the extended keyboard options are handy I use Storyist for this reason alone It makes great short ready to print documents The inability to work with images a less than stellar index card function and the incredibly poor text flow glitch prevent it from being capable of doing much more Though it had four updates last year it has not seen an upgrade since 2013 In the effort to create an all youll ever need text screenplay and pagelayout app Storyist comes up short I give it three stars           Storyist a Swiss Army knife with a few broken tools
This is a five star app but it needs to be updated The template sheets are not fitting correctly on the screen They tend to be too tall and its hard to see what you are typing at the top of the page Hope the dev updates it soon for the new iOS 8                 Update
Loved it at first But soon after I got it I noticed that I cant scroll down to read what Ive written on my phone version of the app It keeps popping back up to the top of the screen The cursor will move below visibility at the bottom of the screen and keep typing but I cant see what Im typing When I use my finger to scroll down and see it automatically bounces back to the top of the page This problem has been on two different phones on both my iPhone 5 and iPhone 6 So I spent all that money and can no longer use my phone to write more than a paragraph If this app worked on those very simple functions it would be worth rating it higher but I need to be able to see what I am writing or whats the point haha Very disappointed in that aspect Hope They either fix it or Apple grants me a refund        Problem
This is app is great for use with everything This is the best app I have ever used for writing my novels and it helps me with my outlining The story sheets are amazingly helpful My only gripe is the lack of being unable to sync with iCloud Drive Heres hoping that comes with a future update I hope Storyist 3 comes to iOS soon              A Fantastic App for All Writers
seamless writing and editing great Dropbox support superb formatting options and a great support and user group Makes Word and Pages look like a ball and chain around the writers ankle Just buy it already                 Best keyboard on the iPad
Thus far Storyist has worked very well for me The icons may take a second or two to catch on but otherwise writing my scripts novels and short stories are a cinch Im still looking at buying Final Draft Writer which thus far has semiok reviews from users I need to use FD Writer and see for myself before I render a verdict on it Personally speaking I had no trouble using this app                 Final Draft Watch Your Back
There are so many useful features I use it for screenwriting creative writing academic writing and journaling If there were an OS X app it would be my next purchase Devs I double dog dare you to make an OS X app companion                 If you write buy this app Seriously you wont regret it
I switched from Scrivener to Storyist because of Storyists IOS support and its excellent iCloud integration I can work on the same file on my iPhone 6 my iPad and of course my Mac You need version 30 or better on both Mac and IOS to do that but it works great I often start writing on my Mac in the morning then move to my iPhone while traveling to work and then on iPad while eating lunch then back to my work Mac then to iPhone going home back to my home Mac ICloud keeps it all syncd and functionality between Mac and IOS devices is good enough that I never feel handicapped other than the limited keyboard on IOS Revisions and reviewing and tweaking are easy on IOS even if thats not the place to bang out a thousand new words The key is I can take advantage of small slices of time to work anywhere now Thats awesome                 Excellent iCloud integration
Being able to work on a project on my desktop then add thoughts while Im at the store is fantastic There is a bit of a learning curve Details such as using CmdEnter to double space do take a bit to figure out the documentation only covers broad explanations not in depth example workflows Overall I highly recommend it                 Perfect balance between ease of use and features
I use Storyist every day on my desktop iPhone iPad No other software for writers does this as far as I know It syncs automatically now to the iCloud which means I can take my iPad with me to lunch and keep writing on the run Its perfect for my needs I wish that Apple would list it in the Apps for Writers section of the app store I give it a full thumbs up                 The best software for writers
Its a nire app One of the few things that would make it better would be a Multiple File Backup For instance say I have a multiple file project and I want to copy all of the files of that project as RTF files to DropBox currently I have to do them one at a time It would be nice to do them all at the same time              Nice App Has a few problems though
When I bought this app for iPad one of the key selling points is that I could use it across multiple devices iPad iPhone Mac What they dont tell you is that the app for Mac is an additional 5999 For me thats a huge piece of the puzzle to leave out I now feel stuck in that if I want to use the app like I want I have to invest another 60 Maybe they should have added some assembly required in the description     Maybe Its Just Me
Despite numerous attempts on my part to back up my project to a Dropbox account specifically for that purpose the program never performed the upload or touched the account despite having the necessary permission and credentials Come new version of the app and the project is gone Im going back to Pages because it syncs properly     This ate a story
This app is exactly what I have been waiting for for my iPad I love writing on my iPad its so easy to keep with me at all times when I need to write and this app makes organizing my writing so much easier Its still missing some much needed features like word counts but hopefully the developers will address this soon It would also be nice to be able to export into Word and keep automatic sync with the Mac version of this software but in the mean time this is about as close to scrivener as you can find in the iPad Great job guys UPDATED iCloud syncing is amazing Now I can pick up my iPad to edit without missing a beat Hands down the best software for onthego writers who work across multiple devices                 This is what Ive been waiting for
I think this app is just about perfect but I have one suggestion for the character and setting sheets add custom fields like the ones you already have build hight etc but allow me to create my own                 Absolutely wonderful
The index card function is slick and powerfulwhen it works Theres a few bugs that I hope they work out And I can finally keep copies of my scripts on google drive That wasnt supported with my FadeIn Pro app The word processing section is amazing              Great App still some bugs
so that I can give it a all the stars              Please update for iOS 8
I have literally tried them all Dozens of writing apps and finally I found this one From the first moment that I began using it I felt that the money spent was well worth it For once Forget about all of the rest of the apps for writing seriously When I cant carry one of my laptops the iPad with Storyist allows me to continue my work                 Excellent
This new version is feature rich For the most part I can do everything on my iPhone or iPad that I can do on the desktop app And the syncing via Dropbox is pretty seamless if you get it set up right                 Best iOS app for novels
I was hoping to replace Final Draft with this but there are FDX formatting issues that need to be resolved
This app seems really stable and the interface is gorgeous responsive and pretty nicely laid out I havent been using it for long but I already can see a couple of things that will drive me nuts in the longrun 1 Having to longpress an index card to edit it Id prefer to double tap it Its just quicker 2 If you delete a section hash mark the card and notes corresponding to it get deleted as well Undoing reinserts the hash mark and generates a new index card but the notes associated with it are not restored           Polished execution could improve concept
This is exactly what Ive been looking for It helps my stories stay organized and its very easy to write and edit in the app itself I love the formatting and templates too One of my favorite things is that I can have multiple projects versus other apps Ive tried that are really only designed for one at a time The customer service is fantastic I had a problem with disappearing text in a file and the developer emailed me back quickly with a work around Everything is working great now Some of the best 10 Ive ever spent on an app Definitely better than Pages or My Writing Spot                 Perfect
This app is all that Ive dreamed it would be when holding out for Scrivener to get their heads out of the sand and design a companion for iPad It has a great interface and basically all the functions of the Mac version with a few exceptions customizing templates etc One thing still needed though is a better way to sync This is an issue for many apps out there right now you need it to be able to sync either automatically or at least within the app so you dont have to page all the way to the home screen An iCloud sync would be ideal That way I dont have to mentally keep track of which device I was working on last to pick up my story and start writing Upgrade the sync functionality and I will give this app five stars As is it has been an invaluable companion to get me through a month of intense writing And to those who are having trouble with setup try reading the tutorials online It works and you may be doing it incorrectly              Revolutionized my on the go writing
A lot of supposed writing apps just dont offer the seamless and easytouse features this one does I love the ability to switch between an outline the text and notecard views The ease with which I can reorder scenes alone is amazing to me My one problem is when switching between a Bluetooth keyboard and the digital keyboard Sometimes it works great most of the time the keyboard simply wont reappear until Ive used the digital keyboard in another app after closing this completely Sometimes even that wont work and I have to reboot my iPad entirely before Storyist will show the keyboard again I would have given 5 stars accept for this annoyance I also wish you could sync via iCloud with Storyist for iPhoneMac              Excellent App
I just want to thank the developers for this last update specifically the automatic syncing I have long since had the app on both my iPad and my iPhone but I would always hesitate and talk myself out of writing on my phone for fear that I had not synced when last I wrote on the pad With this latest update that fear is GONE and my writing time has doubled as I can write fearlessly anywhere and anytime THANK YOU                 BEST UPDATE EVER
Ive been looking at a number of index cardbased writing tools and so far I have yet to find the one that will take me through my whole process which consists of three broad steps 1 jot down my plot points and other brief ideas on index cards until I have a basic skeleton of the story 2 take up each index card and expand on them with more lengthy notes as well as add additional cards also with lengthy notes for the scenes between my plot points 3 start writing the manuscript I currently use the Index Card app which is perfect for the first two steps but which does not have a function to write a formatted manuscript so I have to turn to Word to do that Storyist unfortunately is lacking on my step 2 Sure you can write extensive notes on the card itself but it is a limited view and I would be doing a lot of scrolling to review those longer notes which can go a full page or more Index Card has a couple of ways to add lengthy notes to each card both of which provide a full screen view which has been awesome Thats what Storyist lacks and its a biggie for me In addition I dont find the functionality very intuitive but that may just be a learning curve Other things that dont work great for me I would like to pin the navigation pane while in profile view rather than having to be in landscape view because profile view fits my hands perfectly when writing I understand that would limit the space for the manuscript but couldnt you move the cards across the bottom in that case a la the Skeleton app Also it would be nice if you could view longer card notes while in this view as I am often referring back to the while writing maybe by expanding the card So the long and the short of it is I was hopeful at first but am now a little deflated particularly after paying 10 which is a rather steep price But Ill keep checking back with the hope that some future updates will incorporate the functionality that I need           I guess I cant have it all yet
Ive been using this app for over a year and I love it I bought it because it allows me to write novels short stories and screenplays with everything already formatted Ive been able to take documents from my PC including files from Works and transfer them to app to edit and continue working on them Ive had no problems whatsoever Highly recommend                 Excellent App for real writers
Love the mac app but I cant export as text or PDF with this app frustratingplease fix this thx           Nice app
This app does everything a written needs to write script novel etc its very organized and the flow is smooth I rate five stars because it is well deserved Thank you to the developers of this app You have made my life a lot easier                 PERFECT
After years of waiting I finally jumped ship waiting for literature and lattes to come out with an iPad companion app for Scrivener I was told about storyist and jumped in with both feet A few issues first is the app does not automatically sync documents this is up to you to do as the user Im told that the new storyist Mac app syncs with iCloud but no such option available in app The design is a little plain and as I am running iOS 8 it looks more dull than it would otherwise and has a few up bugs which I dont think are directly the apps fault but it would be great if there were updated to iOS 8 Over a year since the last update and while I would admit this doesnt need to be changed every 30 seconds it would be nice to keep up with OS updates 5 stars when we get iCloud sync in app and iOS 8 update           Almost
Main irritation is that the word count is not easily accessible like the mac version is needs to be visible in some format in the outline view And a total wordcount at the to as well I did the demo on the mac so maybe thats my problem The interface seems a little more jumbled Im going to try it just on the iPad for a bit which is more mobile and with me all the time Kind of irritating that I had to pay for it to even try it out Ill force myself to use it but may switch to scrivener when that comes out if the interface doesnt become more like the mac os version           OK for basic writing
I have tried many but Storyist is the most creative Also thanks for throwing those helpful documents in there They were extremely helpful There are just little things here and there Like for instance When Im typing on a character sheet and press edit to add or delete characteristics doesnt let me shift them up or down Also I would appreciate if you guys could come up with a smoother transition into having the index cards parallel to a document I dont like the fact that I have to press a button then another then another              AWESOME Just Little Kinks
What I love about this app is the simplicity Ive tried several wellknown apps but the complexity and all the features I didnt use just got in the way Theres nothing between my thoughts and the page on this app It writes easy I like the folders for organizing Even use Storyist for semifinal drafts and then export to Word only for final submission format if needed I really dislike Word now              Great for creating
i have two different ipads its great to have them in sync storyist is BEST app for formatting according to industry standards                 cloud syncing
Fantastic app but sometimes I dont have my iPad with me and Id like to continue to work on a story with my phone and thats not a possibility right now           Needs iCloud support
I love this app I really love his app It is incredibly well thought out It has the best keyboard Ive ever seen on an iOS app The Storyist arrow keys are sorely missed whenever I find myself typing on a lesser keyboard and the buttons for formatting a script are just amazing and genius I also really love the way the designers decided to implement the instructions on how to properly use the app If you want to know how to use all the script writing functions they created a fake little screenplay that you read that tells you how to properly use the formatting buttons and simultaneously shows you how they look on a finished formatted script Such a simple and elegant idea My only let down with this app and the only reason why I gave it merely 4 stars instead of a resounding 5 stars is because it is limited on back up sync capabilities I dont have a drop box account but I do have a google drive account but there seems to be no function to back up to google drive at this time Very depressing              Almost perfect
Well designed storyboards index card format which integrate nicely with main manuscript Best when used with bluetooth keyboard                 Best writing app
These guys must be well connected bc my original negative review was removed If this app were 99 or even 3 id give it more stars but at 10 and marketing itself as a pro app that allows you to make pro submissions it is way overreaching It a good development tool with a clever keyboard For that i give two stars If you read the positive reviews carefully youll se that people are happy with the app at first as was I It takes a bit of usage to see its flaws its biggest being that you can not really do pro submissions without things like Spell check which is does not have despite the fix Word count is also not accurate as it counts the chapter heading as part of the total another amateur move I cannot speak for other reviewers but Ive had numerous books published and actually do prolevel submissions and I really wish this app would step up so i could use it as advertised So for now Pages is still my go to app for mobile writing        Great idea but nogo for this Pro
Storyist is a really good useful app it just seems to crash a lot when Im writing and when it crashes all my material goes with it PLEASE FIX THIS     Really good but crashes
This is a very powerful app i love that everything i write is available on both my iPhone and iPad anytime i need it It also has some powerful organization tools like index cards Its my favorite writing app so far and i love how they keep updating it Keep up the great work                 This is the most complete writing solution for the iPad
Like many other reviews on here have stated this app is great Love how easy it is to use and all the awesome options I use FinalDraft on my Gateway and this works well enough for me to be happy and Im super picky For anyone else working with Final Draft who is curious I did run into a couple of spacing issuesissues with how both programs format but nothing that cant be fixed with a few extra minutes of deleting extra spaces and adding tiny notes like contd My only complaint is the syncing The DropBox feature is great but since I already use DropBox for work and cant have two DropBox folders actively syncing on my computer it takes a lot of extra work to go to the website to upload the most current version of whatever script Im working on to then grab it from my iPad The DropBox option also gets a little confusing with revision dates because the app doesnt show that information on the Projects screen it only displays the name I did find out you can see more info if you delete something though lol a scary accident but luckily this app has a Recently Deleted folder which displays the date and time of the project youre trying to restore so I was able to restore my work Heart attack averted Im pretty sure this was a glitch too my main copy deleted when I chose to delete a copy I made of it but like I said good thing that folder is there Itd be nice if there was a strike line through feature in the font options but that might just be me lol it helps with edits So all in all love the app best one Ive found but cloud syncing between devices would be a dream come true PS I read another review where the reviewer said they had problems with the onscreen keyboard not showing up when the Bluetooth keyboard was disconnected For anyone worried I just figured Id mention Ive never had this problem and I switch between the two frequently I have a Logitech keyboard that I purchased from Best Buy not sure if that makes a difference but I figured Id mention it              Yeah What they said
I like the app a lot Its a good word processor I like the word count feature and the index cards The only problem I have encountered is that the app crashes when I try to insert a picture Something that would be great is if you could get the word count for a selection of text              works well but
Update One More Time The icloud for the ipad is sweet Now I can use it on the fly While Dropbox was nice it is clumsy and this makes Storyist much easier on different mac platforms like I have to use Now I keep all the book writing in one place Thanks to Steve and his developers for at last doing this Update it is syncing better now and seems to sync automatically from Dropbox but is still a pain to constantly upload to Dropbox then download to Storyist three I hope it is updated to sync with Storyist 3 but when the syncing works this is a nice app for book length projects Needs ICloud The Dropbox integration screwed up a project I was working on To be effective anymore it needs iCloud Update Fix Storyist of IOS7 It crashes every other minute Arghhhhh I bought Storyist because of its integration through Dropbox with its sibling program on Macs and because of its formatting and publishing capabilities As a writer who does most of his work on iPad and is rarely home long enough to do anything more than an email it was refreshing to find a program that work on both integrate with each other and can make things look professional on both While some of the formatting capabilities such as the ability to do footnotes are lacking on the iPad version it is not a terrible bother Sometimes the formatting from the original templates can be a bear but I am finding ways around that problem I wish that there were more templates other than novel screenplay and blank Sometimes the outliner can be a it it screwy and that chapters cannot be moved around on the iPad version is a bummer There could be more features too like bibliographies and so on Other than that Storyist is a helluva writing program for anyone interested in taking on large writing projects It would be great to have a template designed for nonfiction works or even short stories with the ability to import notes and such Perhaps that is coming someday iCloud sync would be nice too But to tackle large projects from more than one computer Storyist is the way to go Also if the developers actually read these appraisals adding iCloud support would be a great thing Update Was hoping for iCloud with new version Damnit None Dropbox is great to store things but is a bear when working in between devices Please iCloud                 Needs iCloud
I bought this because the idea of writingkeeping notecards alongside my manuscript appealed to me However the format is cumbersome and the syncing with Dropbox very finicky in my experience it creates a new file every time and syncs that new file with the app so you open your app and eventually have 10 copies of your document etc Unfortunately I no longer use this app to write so I would not have paid for it Two stars for effort and because the idea is great I wish it could be better implemented        finicky syncing format
