Whenever I ran the app my wifi connection drops And it is very clumsy I own iphone version too Urgently needs an update        Needs some work
Im not sure what it is but in this app I keep seeing the sky as looking down on a convex halfsphere with the stars etc painted on the OUTSIDE of it Im not sure whether its the app or my perception but I cant manage to see it as looking up at the INSIDE of a halfsphere with the night sky projected on it I have other astronomy apps Star Walk Distant Suns and I dont have this issue with them Anybody else see it the way I do        Eyes playing tricks
Day 2 and eventually got what I wanted more or less Will take another trank tomorrow and see if I can find a horizon instead of a big round ball of stars etc But I still gotta say I like the simple iPhone version a lot better Day 7 Stopped working iPhone version still great If you want to see what is up there by pointing use your iPhone and a magnifying glass     Too painful
The latest version is improved with fuzzy stars and alluppercase common star names a step backwards in my opinion fixing things that werent broken Please either take these features out or give us a way to configure them allowing us to choose           A step backwards
By not upgrading their own app one of the bests has become one of the worst One simple reason you need AirPlay Mirroring to be useful as an astronomy app You TRIED but its broken Ive switched to Star Walk with its awesome mirroring Goodbye Starmap        Has become lame
If you are at all interested in the night sky and have an iPad this is THE software for you At 99 cents it is without a doubt well worth it                 I never write reviews
I was trying to refrain from purchasing one of the many night sky apps but the price and rave reviews of Starmap HD pushed me over the edge Im glad I took the plunge this app is one of the best on iPad The simple interface and animated star field might seem elementary at first that is until you dive into the plethora of options and customizations offered with a tap of the more button Settings like night vision keep your bright iPad from light polluting the stars above you compass orients your iPads screen to match your exact perspective and Planets gives you a timeline viewing guide for pinpointing when where and how to get the best glimpse of celestial bodies in our solar system There are many features to explore each is amazing and filled with powerful helpful information This app will keep you busy for many many nights                 Feature rich and worth 10x the price
I work at an observatory Ive used starmap on my iPhone I just got an iPad This is a fabulous update to an already spectacular app If they were charging 999 rather than 99 I still would have purchased it in a heartbeat                 Start charging more
I bought this app because I though all the art feature in the other star apps were too cluttered for my liking This is the first app that I got the compass to work right away Who knew with Starwalk etc that you had to raise the ipad above your head to activate the compass I also like the dark horizon on this app versus a dashed line and stars below the horizon as in other apps As I currently cant see through the earth it makes more sense to me I dont like the mottled coloring of the sky near the horizon and it would be neat if the screen darkened based on the time I thought that some of the info on the rise times could be wrong as in Mars on 623 showed a rise time in the afternoon and a set time at 010 with the same date of 623 Shouldnt it have been 624 Am I reading it wrong The compass feature on this app has been very accurate an flows smoothly with movement The interface can be a bit daunting But it has so many great features and I am not sure how one would simplify it Still its easy to use and I like it very much              Favorite Astronomy app so far
StarmapPro is more complete versjon        StarmapPro
I bought this app for 1899 and no returns thanks apple thinking it was the one you hold up to the sky and it shows you what youre looking at But nope its not Im sure this is great for a pro but way too complicated and technical for me Wish I could exchangeoh well learned my lesson     Dont buy unless youre professional astronomer
This app is excellent I have been using starmap pro on my iPhone since it was released As soon as I heard the announcement of the iPad I knew I was going to get one and load up StarMap Took a while to get it but patience is a virtue I finally can use this and take advantage of the ipads bigger screen 99 cents is a steal for this app                 The main reason I bought an iPad
Not sure how useful unless you are an astronomer but it is fun to take outside at night Much better than reading the star tracking news in the paper Good for impressing noniPad users In fact this app was recommended by an Apple instructor                 Fun to have
This is the most amazing star app ever It was 20 on the iPhone but on the website it says that the 099 price is just for people who follow them and dont have to pay 20 again The price will go back up so get it now for 099 Also even if the price does go back up still get this app It tells you EVERYTHING you need to know about anything with astronomy GET THIS APP                 Most Amazing Star App Ever
This appears to be full of bugs I was really excited to see the eyepiece view that is supposed to invert the display to resemble the actual view in the telescope This doesnt work It appears to resemble the magnification and FOV of my selected eyepiece but the field is not inverted as seen in the eyepiece When pinching or spreading the display the view will suddenly jump to a completely different position in the sky When tapping on objects to display the names the app often gets stuck on that object and displays the same information no matter what is tapped Another wired thing I just centered Venus in the east then started spreading the display to magnify Venus but instead of getting larger it kept shrinking and eventually completely disappeared This would be hands down the best astronomy app out there if it actually worked as it should UPDATE Did figure out the eyepiece inversion You have to swipe the display horizontal or vertical The jumping around appears to be because the program only updates the movement of the sky only every 10 or 15 seconds You got to be kidding me        Really Great Features If Only They Worked
Great app The views of the universe are breathtaking Love the updates                 Awesome views
I have been checking every day for the release of this product and it is finally here Starmap Pro on the iPhone has become my favorite observing companion It however had only one shortcoming the small screen of the phone The iPad version will provide much more real estate and a more intuitive view of the sky I love the easy and automatic navigation around the sky With this tool you are never lost in the heavens Of you become disoriented just use the compass Better than a bound map no leafing through pages Better than GOTO on your telescope you can explore whole regions of the sky rather then flipping from one side of the sky to another in search of highlights Touring through the iPad HD application reveals a much greater depth of content and a much richer experience This application is highly recommended for the amateur astronomer I would not recommend it for the casual observer There is a learning curve to its use However with a brief investment of time this program will reward you with a very powerful astronomy tool                 A planetarium in your hand
I got this earlier at a very reasonable price Told family and friends about it but all have balked at the 19 price The interface is clumsy but the information is great Nice to be able to take the iPad out and lay out looking at the stars I guess the calculus of their sales is they would rather have fewer high paying customers than more lower paying ones           Nice but now prohibitively expensive
Finally a way to identify the stars and planets No I dont feel so bad about dropping Astronomy Cant wait to show the kids Very cool                 Awesome
This is a fantastic app If you enjoy astronomy then youll enjoy this app One small item personal preference for me I dont like the globe mode way of looking at the night sky I want to see the night sky as I look at it in my backyard not a round globe Maybe I missed a setting somewhere but I tried to switch the view to normal instead of round globe but got frustrated              Great App Worth More Than a Buck
Try turning on compass and zoom and as you move your iPad around the star map will move with you showing you what you should see                 Seriously This is an AMAZING value
I had the original version for the iPhone which I loved The same app up scaled for the iPad is spectacular I would have gladly paid the price of the original iPhone version which was 1899 as I recall to get this HD version on my iPad For 99 its a steal Even after the promo rate goes off its worth the price Far and away the best astronomy app out there                 DAZZLING
This app is a tool not a toy It is incredibly useful for amateur astronomy Other astronomy apps may be prettier Starwalk Star Voyager etc but this is far and away more thoughtfully designed and usefulI no longer carry star charts around And those competing apps seem clunky and unintuitive by comparison                 Why I bought an iPad
My son and I love using this app The learning curve is a bit steep but it works great                 Neat application
I really tried hard to like this app especially since I was able to get it at its 099 introductory price before its current forbidding ridiculous and entirely unworthy one Let me say that Im neither a professional nor amateur astronomer Hell I just like looking at constellations while on longhaul flights While I dont know azimuths from apogees I do know when an app is welldesigned and this is definitely not The controls are all counter intuitive and confusing whats more the myriad button selections change on you for no clear reason forcing you to hunt and peck through the lit all over again The menu layouts are similarly unclear and like the entire program itself smack of a good idea but illexecuted and with no real guts If you want to see what this app strives to be check out Distant Suns Beautiful Thoughtful Wellconceived Elegant Starmap on the other hand is a dress rehearsal full of understudies One waits for the principals        Version 1
Needs settings to switch viewing orientation Many reports of concave vs convex sphere projection issues are true This may not be a problem for experienced astronomers but it is very confusing for beginning enthusiasts like myself After searching through all settings I resorted to having to hold my iPad over my head to find the constellations I was looking for Too bad this is so frustrating because I absolutely LOVE everything else about this app An easy Fivestar app if it simply had a setting to switch the viewing orientation     No viewing orientation settings
I pay for this app didnt work exactly what is say i hope they can give me my oney bck its very expensive     Star Map
Love it though waiting for a pro version                 Thumbs up
There are a ton of nice features and settings in this app that make it one of my two favorites in his category I used this app on a recent trip to the southern hemisphere where the night skies are unfamiliar to me and it wad a big help Even with all of the available settings I wish for a few more Thinner gridlinesconstellation lines more control over the number of displayed star names and selectable sky projections Thanks for the good nightvision mode Unlike some other reviewers I find the large panel of settings comforting              Rich set of features
Not sure how this is getting such hot reviewsnot that great Plenty of others out there that are way better
I too dont get the good reviews This app is ok at best I find it clumsy and counterintuitive The star map is projected on the outside of a sphere So unless you zoom in everything looks weird Whats more I am getting a little bored with HD titles that just arent I much prefer skywalk These guys also did some strange translations lesser bear Greater bear Ursa where are you        Huh
I have the iPhone version and use it camping with scouts all the time Its amazing Ive tried many others but this one is the most featurerich of all Just point the device to the sky and begin identifying everything Note you may wish to tweak your user settings a bit to easily identify planets from stars This is a very simple change in the preferences area of the app At 99 this is a steal I paid 10x that for the iPhone version and feel I got my moneys worth Thanks for porting this to the iPad I will be using it soon Great software                 Best Astronomy App
The best of the best                 Excellent
While I agree that the interface could be better the latest version is much better than the previous one It is definitely difficult to jam all of features of this app on to the screen in a consistent interface I still press the wrong thing or get lost not knowing how to get back to where I want to go That said I dont think Ill be using my telescope without this app nearby I cant say that for any of the other astronomy apps Ive used For live observation the map telrad finder and eyepiece view are the killer features Using the eyepiece view I was able to observe the Coma cluster with my 10 Dob I wouldnt have known I was looking in the right place had I not been able to confirm with the eyepiece view Once I did a bit of careful observation revealed the very faint clusters of galaxies Im hoping for continued improvements to make this an even better companion for visual observing              The only serious replacement for astronomy charts
This is the best astronomy app out there with the tonight feature that shows you what will be the best objects to view in a given evening might be a little clunky but after proper set up its a breeze to use                 I do not get the 1 stars
As an avid user of Starmap Pro I too have been checking every day for the release of the iPad version Star Walk may be getting a lot of attention but its a near useless program for an amateur observer this is the astronomy app you really need if you plan on actually going outside and turning your eyes or your optics to the sky The larger format of the iPad makes a formerly cumbersome menu system much faster and easier to navigate I also owe a huge thank you to the author for the introductory pricing I had been hoping for universal apps but as technical reasons prevented it I am glad that I didnt have to spend another 20 though by all measures this app would be a steal at 100 too                 Best astronomy companion app period
This is really nice A significant fraction of the apps are not worth your download time not to speak of the price HOWEVER this in not one of them                 Great app
If you like astronomy then you need this app Very detailed and feature rich Buy it                 Feature Rich
Ive had the iPhone version Starmap Pro since it came out and touted its greatness to many members of many astronomy clubs At this price point it certainly deserves 5 stars and probably more You cant go wrong with this app However This app is almost 2 years old and little to no attention has been paid to its catalogs We have yet to see a Caldwell catalog Herschel Mel catalog or a list of bright double stars and asterisms One other rather important gripe is the keyboard while in night vision mode The keyboard is still the same grayish white and at this size totally ruins night vision so avoid using any search function requiring the keyboard Ive made the same gripes in the iPhone reviews more than once and I see these have been ignored and thus I can only give this 4 stars because there is certainly room for improvement As a serious amateur astronomer Id gladly pay 50 for a more diverse catalog selection and night vision keyboard              My wish list
This app is just perfect Not only is it amazing and gorgeous with the user interface but the customer support is also amazing Must get app if you have any interest in space                 Wow
We are fortunate to have several great astronomy apps out there for the iPad Three of the most fullfeatured are GoSkyWatch Starmap HD and SkyVoyager These apps should be evaluated based on the use of the user I do not currently use these apps for telescope control I do not use them for detailed research I use them mostly as interactive star charts for viewing WIth my use in mind I feel that each has some pros and cons For example GoSkyWatch currently version 41 has a generally nice interface and set of features but it requires me to drag the screen over an element eg a star that I want more information about Why shouldnt I just be able to point and touch the star to select it rather than move the chart under the target in the middle of the screen Starmap HD currently version 10 has just about everything that I want and more than GoSkyWatch allows me to click on links but its toolbar is so convoluted that I dont even get the same icons on the bottom of the screen each time that I use the application Its just very difficult to find what one wants among the moving 4x9 list of icons in the expanded toolbar SkyVoyager currently version 162 is also beautiful and has just about everything I want but one key dealbreaker it doesnt have a fullsky field of view FOV It is limited to 90 degrees Thus its ability to be my star chart that I take outside with me to see what is in the sky or just about to be in the sky is substantially limited without panning around the limited FOV In contrast both GoSkyWatch and Starmap HD offers a fullsky view At the moment due to the lack of selection objects by pointing in GoSkyWatch and due to the lack of fullsky view in SkyVoyager I am a Starmap HD viewer But I would still love to see Starmap HD receive an interface facelift which would make it a truly beautiful app At the same time I can also see how either GoSkyWatch or SkyVoyager could also improve to topple Starmap HD if they addressed some of the issues that I have with them too              Great app but very cluttered interface
cumbersome slow buggy menu with a million unintuitive buttons planisphere will move on its own for no reason or if u briefly touch one of the ipads edge press one of the 30 or so buttons it might take some time to load moving from telescope mode to planisphere mode takes time button pressing and patience they need to hire someone to test the product i wish i could return it and get my money back better alternatives are skyvoyager for more detail or starwalk for less if u r starting in astronomy go w starwalk fabulous interface they also make planet walk that is just as intuitive fast and worth the money     worst alternative
This is one of the loveliest and most visually stunning applications Ive ever opened But some key things I wanted to do are even harder than on the iPhone version For instance I want to be able to stand outside find the Big Dipper one of the few things I can easily recognize and then use Starmap to show me where to look for Orion or the Small Dipper or Cassieopeia But familiar constellation names are not listed so I can not get Starmap to highlight the Big Dipper it is not even a choice on any of the lists If I succeed in locating it in Starmap anyway I can not then easily get it to point around to where for instance Orion is Also I can not figure out how to get it to make a picture overlay on the constellation as it does in iPhone To learn constellations I have found myself making better progress with static images and maps which are nowhere near as realistic and exciting as Starmaps gorgeous realistic environment Also the navigation scrolling in menus not the sky view is jerky not smooth like the iPhone app For reference Im using the new hires iPad           Beautiful but not that easy to use
Starmap enables the user to sooon be able to recognize constellations stars and deep sky objects The motion aspect helps a novice to orient oneself to the sky After a few uses a novice begins to become familiar with the sky The updates only make a great product better The support answer all questions well This is one of the best apps I use and use                 Starmap is great
The only thing more unbelievable than the look feel and functionality of this incredible app is its insanely low price                 Amazing App Amazing Value
For 099 this app is stunning Compares very well to Starwalk and other 15 apps I have used If you have any interest in Astronomy this is the best place to start Fantastic                 Amazing app
Wow This is just a beautiful and amazingly comprehensive astronomy ap                 Love it
Get this app its great                 Get it
This app called the HD version hardly looks HD compared to SkySafari As I zoom in theres no image of the DSO not a big deal but for a 19 app called HD I would expect more Especially since I cant put this on to my iPhone instead I would have to buy another 19 copy for my phone SkySafari works on both platforms and less money I have no affiliation with SkySafari I have a 20 Obsession and a couple of nice APO refractors I use I do not like the fact there is no list for double stars and what double stars are on there they have no listing of separation and other info I would normally use No listing for brightest stars nearest stars or even named stars They are in there just harder to find I do not like that there is no information or description of stars names meanings or anything without having to download the wiki to get that info And to take my iPad even if it had 3G out to a dark site the chances are slim to even have any cell service So this app makes no sense The search function is difficult to use and find I do not like that theres no zoom button on the screen Instead I have to go find it and then hit it a dozen times to zoom in or out It wont even let me select Polaris Not many user defined settings like precession appearance mirror flip etc I dont like how the planets are laid out ie I cant go to Jupiter zoom in and see what the planet and moons look like right now or skip ahead by the minute hour day or month How are you suppose to know what to expect without a real time image of the planets I didnt see a way to create my own observing list I liked the user defined telescope and eyepiece options That would have been neat however even that was not like other desktop applications Ive used I liked the images just wish they were built into the sky And I liked the list for whats in tonights sky Some of the charts are nice Aside from that SkySafari is by far worth more and costs less is easier to use beautiful to look at works on all iOS platforms and controls the scope with great accuracy Also SkySafari has a a lite version and an option for an expansion pack depending on your level of astronomy     Had high hopes
