Refers to the iPod shuffle as iShuffle Wha Description says archival photographs original sketches but there is only ONE picture of each object Only way to navigate this is through a flying timeline of unlabeled images no bookmarks Tremendous overabundance of forks spoons and plates Otherwise really neat content I emailed the developer and they promised better navigation and more pictures and if they implemented that I would have no trouble recommending this app it is SO much cheaper and profoundly more convenient than 3 gigantic books     Very Misleading Description and some errors
Ironically this superb book has a really poorly designed interface Good design is first and foremost functional design Lots of necessary functionality is missing here Indicies search capability etc Please do not use bold white type on black It is not pleasant to read Just because you can does not mean you should The animations are boring oldschool irritating nearly nauseating and worst of all add neither beauty nor functionality please lose them This app has taken one of the joys in life looking at a Phaidon book and turned it into a frustrating experience Please get this right I would love to have a collection of Phaidon volumes on my iPad would love to see another one of my favorites on the iPad The art of looking sideways        Really bad interface for such a great book
This is a superb compendium of design but the app itself falls far short of reasonable expectations There is zero search functionality and this is a design reference book Doesnt make sense Existing user interface is wholly unintuitive Text should float over image and be userpositionable Instead it obscures the very image it references Use of iPad accelerometer tilts image matrix but will not fully rotate to portrait view Whats the point Very much hoping this app will be further developed        Not Ready Demo Functionality At Best
I am really enjoying this book and working my way through all 1000 objects Its quite good as is but I will be happy to see the updates please note The Comet jet has two title entries that overlap making it unreadable Id mention the entry number but I cant see it Add this to your fix list Really looking forward to more Apps like this Thanks for trailblazing              Loving this found a typo
Great content but lack of high quality graphics No zoom I want to look closely at design masterpieces but that is pointless since photos are in low resolution 1024x768           No retina no zoom
1000s of objects many of them every day objects you take for granted like the paperclip or scissors are examined and given the historical background of with pics and drawings patent applications etc Every time I sit down with this I learn the most amazing facts about sometimes mundane things Like for example jigsaw puzzles Who would have ever thought that their was a time in our country when it was the Saturday night thing to do And they would sell 50000 of a single puzzle in one week Or how about hot air balloons The first passengers were a chicken and a goat and a duck I think This book will amaze you and delight you with history and wonderfully detailed pictures of the most ordinary to the some of the most sought after objects in the world Well worth the 20 and god would some of these other companies putting out ebooks follow this outstanding example This book could very well be object 1001                 Phaidon design classics this is object 1001
lets go slowpokes              Great app but NEEDS RETINA DISPLAY UPDATE
I cant beleive you still didnt enable this book with multitasking wake up        Multitasking not working
At this price retina display is a must Please update At least handle the type It is almost unbearable It would be 5 stars with a retina display update           Cool app needs retina display update
I agree with the others about needing search and other functions and welcome the next version but I strongly recommend that you ditch the animation both the travel thru time business at the beginning and the venetianblind transitions The first bit is not fuctional its hard to click on a design with so many passing by quickly and the second the transitions between pages might be interesting for the first minute but is definitely annoying afterwards And the sound doesnt help either Stop trying to be cute This is an excellent body of material Whoever is advising you to gild the lily is off the mark              Good but Ditch the Animation
This is an excellent app that works well Its also a large app that loads slowly it cries out for iOS 4 support of multitasking so you dont have to endure the wait each time you leave the app to do further research of a topic with Google or Wikipedia 5 stars when the wait is gone              Nice design good value
The images are beautiful but until some future version includes a way to navigate through the collection or to find an item the application is purely decorativeand otherwise useless        Impossible to navigate
As other reviewers have noted some basic things are missing Why give me gorgeous images of design objects and lock me away from zoom The browse ui is innovative and serendipitously pleasurable what flipping through a paper book does on paper this does in the iPad But if you are inspired by design buy this The ui can evolve the design inspirations are irreplaceable especially at this imagetoweight ratio              A pleasure keep working
Fix please I love this app                 Love it but crashing in iOS 8
Its a pity you havent got 5 starsyouve addressed most concerns addressed with the updates Version 111 builds on 11 with further refinements and touches Since when does a book update Most excellent Endlessly fascinating When are you releasing other books in this format My wallet is ready Pick one release it and Im there                 Nice updates great usability improvements
please update to support retina otherwise wonderful     retina
A book about design classics that is almost impossible to use No index toc search Wait tell its done before you release it I have the hard copy version and like it very much and this should be a nice augmentation but its useless     Released too soon
This is a steal in comparison to the physical version tons of great pictures and commentary on some of the most influential and timeless industrial designs Really fun to browse in your free time That said the interface is a bit awkward and full use of Apples multitasking API isnt there takes a minute to reload if u accidentally hit the iPads home button There are also a handful of typos here and there but it really is a great app at a great price                 Really great
This application is nothing more than a randomly presentation kaleidoscope of items from their print book and I feel quite ripped off Its beautiful to look at as youd expect from Phaisods publishing standards so I give it points technically a point for aesthetics Collections of design icons from the printed version float at you Star Wars opening sequence style If you are content poking at whatever item happens to come forward to find out its vitals youll be amused and content But expect nothing more Its impossible to navigate it on your own and if you actually wanted to search for a particular item or use it as a reference exploration or research tool there is zero ability to do so Stay away from it from the price until then update it to make it more than a screen saver     Visually fun utterly useless application
People who love Apple for their design excellence should like this book for its subject and layout Finally an innovative book design for an innovative product the iPad Very original and satisfying presentation of the subject A model for creativity that shows the potential for other visually orientated books such as illustrated books                 A model of innovation for the iPad
I love the minimalist approach to UI in this app It does exactly what its supposed to and nothing more The fact that I can take 3300 pages of creative inspiration with me anywhere anytime at a fraction of the price is brilliant The only things I could ask for are variable speed control on flying product animation pinch to zoom on product images                 Wonderful
Updated with Operational Improvements tells us nothing and from the few minutes Ive spent using the updated version the only difference I can see is that the animation of the cloud is modified There are serious problems with the usability of this application and Phaidon really owes it to their customers to fix these problems and make it work the way that it should Iron out the details people Release a major update Fix the navigation problems Shorten the useless animations Modify text presentation so I dont have to scroll so much Heck modify the text presentation so I dont have to read so much bold white over black This could be a great resource and as one of the most expensive iPad apps in the store you owe it to your customers to update this just as other app developers are expected to update theirs Not just operational improvements Fix it           Still Needs Fixing
Clearly its early days in the world of iPad publishing The potential for publishers to leverage this technology is staggering However Ive yet to see someone get it right Time magazine is perhaps the closest the feeling of traditional print with some interactive bits Looking at this app makes me cringe Why would you take a beautiful book and unleash a interactive flash designer on it This is frustrating and annoying I just want to be able to browse the beautiful world of industrial design why do you want to make it so difficult Constant motion and terrible sound fx that cant be turned off confusing UI no search no real browsing no linear sense of place Once I randomly select a floating image in this weird PC style screensaver I get a nice full screen image Swiping back and forth unleashes a rattle snake and an awful powerpoint vertical blind transition tap on the info button and the text plops overtop the beautiful image and slowly and not smooth I might add Just because you can add all this animation and sound doesnt mean you should Have you ever heard of the adage Less is more This reminds me of the early days of the interactive cd rom then its modern contemporary the massive flash website Please hire a real and thoughtful designer to put this kind of thing together and think about how real people actually interact with things 1999 well wasted Lets hope youve learned something by version 2     How could a book on design be so poorly designed
Great Cant wait for the free updates adding indexing etc Ideas how about an easy sound off button Those metal sounds are cool for about 3 pages but you dont need to hear them 1001 times Easier scrolling page to page Only pop up the info tabs when requested A nice fading screen saver mode with no text that stays awake with a simple clock option and swipe to dim would killer              Nice
Big whoop I thought A book on the iPad And for 1995 But Ive got a stack of Phaidon books that never fail to inspire I bought this only because of Phaidons reputation It was worth it They always add little extras to their books and after the initial coolness wore down I discovered that they even involved the tilt sensors in this app I found myself not only reading intelligent commentary about cool stuff like the iPod but I also became fascinated with tables and stacking chairs Anyone who loves good design will love this Like most welldesigned things this book doesnt blow you away with gimmicks it blows you away with content You cant find this kind of dense content on a blog Bravo once again Phaidon                 Phaidon does it again
I never thought I would pay this much money for any app but Im a sucker for great design And this app does have hundreds of fantastic designs to look at beautifully presented from paper clips to Boeing 747s My only two criticisms 1 Too many chairs 181 out of 1000 designs is way too many for me 2 The fancy UI tries too hard and gets in the way of ease of use Not good design itself Oh heres a third bonus criticism 3 Some of the pictures are very low res If the developers couldnt find a better pic Id rather they just left the object out              Great App If You Love Chairs
At 20 bucks its a bargain over the 3 volume set and easier to manipulate in many ways However the interaction design hardly keeps pace for example you have to start the book on load Secondly there is a momentary glimpse of an iPhoto style grid view that disintegrates into a star field effect that seems gratuitous thirdly the transition from page to page is a horrible blind that mars the beauty of the photo Finally the most egregious is that the accompanying text has trigger buttons that move around from corner to corner even when triggered they are tough to read I suppose an interaction design class could offer fixes to this but I trust the developers should make a the tweaks and figure out how to make this a more enriching interactive experience I paid my 20 to help fund this effort           Please help make the interaction as good as the content
Phaidon 1000 is where design began for me I had a closer relationship with its contents than I did with most of the people in my high school That being said this needs to be available on all Mac platforms I know that doing the lay out for this would be extraordinarily expensive but I think it would be well received              Phaidon 1000 is the bible for designers
App looks pixelated on iPad mini retina     Needs to be updated for retina display
I have had this book app from version 10 and it was worth it then This app has become one of the best coffee table books on the iPad Wow factor for any iPad demo                 New version is a must have for any iPad
Gorgeously designed beautifully implemented Educational and inspirationalwell worth the twenty bucks                 Incredible
It took longer than it should have but here is my updated review The interface is much improved and the program is now MUCH more fun to leaf through Thanks to the developers for fixing it and making it into a great app Great job Previous review I will update the rating once the interface is fixed I promise Right now it is almost unusable Luckily the developers have said improvements are on the way                 Interface is much much much better Thanks
The new version adds search index and a cover flow This is a must for any design enthusiast                 Great update
An absolute bargain and an enlightening celebration of industrial design Well presented but at the moment poorly organized The constantly scrolling thumbnails is attractive at first but a distraction once the novelty wears off The next update which adds an index and search capabilities should remedy this shortcoming The app can also feel slightly sluggish at times Regardless it is an essential and wellpriced purchase for anybody passionate about design In response to an earlier reviewer the shuffling metal sounds can be disabled in the settings menu Cheers              A Beautiful Start
Its ok but not worth the the price           Its alright
Index would be nice and coming but this gorgeous And endlessly fascinating The time line helps to fine objects or just push on the screen as item flies by Sometimes you get what you hit sometimes a surprise The three books are big and heavy And cost 175US This 20 Big bargain                 Terriffic app
LOVE the content and though the format is more conducive to random browsing than purposeful searching ie no index its original and a lot of fun and shows some fresh thinking about how a book can be published in the age of tablets But what good are the amazing photos if they dont take advantage of the full resolution If youre going to keep it on sale update it to support retina display Id give 45 stars for supporting retina and another 05 star for an index           Retina version PLEASE Long overdue
Wonderful photos but pretty frustrating to navigate Basic touch gestures are unsupported no pinch to zoom No way to swipe left and right to move quickly through pages instead you get a slow and useless checkerboard animation It could be so much better if it were just simpler           Frustrating interface
I would have given it five stars if it had an index There are a few punctuation issues in some of the text boxes but thats a minor annoyance Landscape view only is a bit of a drag but ill live Still a great app though              Great app
You know when the splash screen says coming soon search and browsing youve been jacked This is most useless piece of imaginable a randomized mosaic screen saver that focuses into an icon of modern design But thats about it only a scant paragraph of descriptive text no additional or bibliographic material and no ability to actually find a design or designer you might be looking for Its a sad sad joke of an application Phaidon and Apple should be ashamed of themselves far from being a showcase of what the iPad can do it only showcases how easily I was duped into wasting my money and time its a huge download on this miserable scrap of garbage Dont waste yours     I want my 20 back
Look forward to promised enhancements and disagree with some of the harsher criticisms What is its use To educate and inspire It needs the index for sure              Amazing collection
No multitasking clumsy navigation looks dated           Dated
This is where art book publication begins for the iPad More Phaidon more contemporary art please                 YES
I have nothing to add on the nice reviews of the material itself After 20 minutes playing for the first time my eyes are already strained by the small font I wish the updates can adjust font and text box size with a pinch and one can move the text box around so it doesnt cover the picture being described For that sake I would also like the option of moving the picture around Zooming of pictures is a must on iPad come on              Nice material beginner UI
