New Scientist is the world s most-read weekly popular science and technology magazine. Every week, New Scientist offers: - Accurate, easy-to-understand coverage of the latest discoveries and what they will mean for your life. - A ...
Pathetic that one of the best science and technology magazines in the wold is delivered in an app that feels like a web page from the 90s Basically just PDFs of the mag stuffed into an app Everything is clunky and non intuitive And the app trims content so its a lot thinner than the print version Mind blown Also Scroll through the 5 star reviews They re obviously written by the design team That s the only reason this awful app can be at 3 8 stars         Great Mag Terrible App Tsao Tsao
Warning do not use this app It says I don t need a log in because I bought my year to year subscription thru the iTunes Store but guess what The app asks me for a log in anyway Which doesn t exists because I bought the app thru the apple What horrible junk                     I bought a new iPad but I can t read the magazine anymore Dig Duggan
The new app is a backward step in usability Instead of clear text labels for functions there are vague icons stop this stupid dumbing down and obfuscation of user interfaces Months after this app was released I m still struggling with it I m actually considering going back to the paper version I cannot even find Way to simply read cover to cover Finding the FIRST story in the issue is HARD Guys I m a software designer This app is BAD     Backward step in usability ATXDavidG
Worked for about two days now the app does not allow me to access Credentials work online but not via app Very frustrating                     UGH GoodPizzaPie
App crashes all the time Very frustrating Now I need to figure out how to cancel my subscription     Don t bother Kerfind
I subscribed this on 10 8 but can not set up password Sent email and called left message to customer service and no body get back to me I called couple times and finally get in touch with one lady but she obviously a clock water and more interested to get of duty than solve my issue Her explain to me is that my account will not be effective until 10 21 I was surprised about this and never met same situation with any other magazine So I told her I have done with this and ask for cancellation Good she told me they wont process it five days later And no confirmation number no other follow up call or email Guess she just lie to me and I have to waste time call them again to make sure they will process my cancellation     Slow and unreliable customer service GLI130
How could such a good science magazine put out such a terrible app Pretty much unusable Hasn t been updated in a year Get it together new scientist     Terrible Dhbernstein
New Scientist is by far the best general science publication for an educated person to stay informed of developments in all the major areas The App for iPad is very user friendly                     Outstanding Science Publication and App NJ Gymrat
Great magazine read for 50 years This app is a disgrace on so many levels Surely no scientist was consulted     Shameful App grazy2
I can read current and past issues on my computer in a browser but to read on iPhone or iPad my subscription does not authorize reading it seems s that a separate subscription is required Probably an oversight by New Scientist management Consider how long it takes to read an issue each week and the utility to start with the hard copy and follow up in short dips over the week The Economist and The New Yorker work for me that way     Does not work as on the computer OldMaster
Easy to use Nice clear layout and it just works so far                     Very good app Pratap Paruchuru
Irritating app Won t recognize my account         Meh Dracunculus
A great informative digital or print magazine with articles that are real facts researched not fake news                     NewScience cabotdavis
I m tired of having to call to find out why the app isn t working After being a subscriber for decades and having a house full of old issues I thought the app would save space and reduce clutter but I find myself running to the store to not avoid waiting until Monday to fix the problem Please get your act together     New Scientist app is pathetic PDBDDS
Great content mediocre interface                 Great content mediocre interface S_Mark
I love this magazine and the events it holds                     Awesome valgerry
This app supersucks for all of the reasons given in the other reviews I ve been a new scientist subscriber for over 40 years and yet the app refused to recognize my subscription number I had expected the app to have a search option so you could search previous magazines by keyword None of that I m not interested in downloading magazines I have a print subscription     So very very bad Chebyshev13245
If you want to keep current with Scientific topics this is a most proven way to accomplish that                     New Scientest LairdofGlencairn
Amazing that such an incredible magazine about science and technology is delivered through one of the worst apps out there Terrible UI with lame features and worst of all a tendency to lock up on issues and then never release them You can t even delete them when they get like this short of uninstalling the entire app Which would be fine except you then would lose the scrapbook of saved articles And seems like the problem gets worse with time I have half a dozen issues from the last 6 months I can neither read nor delete Which is the second worst thing Great you can save individual articles But no way to sync these across devices or somehow save them in the cloud for later syncing if you buy a new device Too bad really Because the content is as New Scientist has always been fantastic     One of the worst GypsyRambler
I ve been reading ns for a few decades Went all digital for a few years but now am back to paper web and app Great content The app is frequently frustrating             Best content meh app Sulubu
First things first I am a very biased 25 year reader of New Scientist I love their content which is just the right mix of general science content and allows me to delve deeper if I want But the app How they ve screwed this so badly I don t know It s worse in every conceivable way from the previous UX starting with the useless cover selection that now takes no less than four clicks to download an issue There s also no feedback on how far it s downloaded and seems troubled if you ask it to download more than one issue at a time Coupled with data corruption issues and an order of magnitude slower everything omg this version is terrible Please revert to the previous code                     Fantastic content terrible ux vanderaj
This is a must magazine for anyone that is interested in science Every article is an important read I read cover to cover                     Great magazine Cajoh
Love this magazine and although I have subscribed to a plethora of magazines in my life this is the only one I have kept Every time it would expire I would find myself perturbed when it wasn t in the mail box And with the app I can read it on my phone so the kids can page through the hard copy I was always asking them where s the new scientist and would have to dig it out of their room or search the car now I don t have to                     Enjoyable Lofotan
It seems evert new release update of an app is less comprehensive than the previous This is true of most software Why can you not just leave it alone just                     It always gets worse FirstWOOF
I subscribed to New Scientist via iTunes expecting that I had access to all referenced material contained within a digital edition of the magazine Much to my annoyance I do not The direct purchase of a subscription to New Scientist via iTunes versus their web site are NOT the same thing Unfortunately I do not have access to any of the published copies of New Scientist contained on their website Apparently and according to New Scientist the two subscription types are not related I will not renew my iTunes subscription fortunately I only subscribed to three months     Great App but avoid
I really enjoy the newscientist digital magazine app easy to navigate interface makes for a very enjoyable reading experience thanks                 love the interface on this app
Great information interesting and thought provoking topics and overall great writing The menu on the side of each magazine and the option to browse through older magazines was very well done I highly recommend this magazine                 Great magazine
Overall the app is nice to work with and the information covered by the magazine is interesting              Overall
The app works well Nothing to write about of significance I very much enjoy the magazine which is why I got the app in the first place Updated 12314 The app continues to work as advertised I would like it to be easier to share articles with friends but this is a minor concern                 No Complaints New Scientist is a Great Read
Only complaint is that the app cant seem to remember where I left off so I have to relocate it                 Works well
Brilliant content combined with a slick intuitive and easily navigable interface                 Superior readability and interactivity
I just got the app and Ive tried to download an issue six or seven times without success It gets perhaps halfway through then fails and has to start over which is technically incredibly naive why doesnt the download resume from where it failed     Cant recover from failed downloads
Though Im sure there are various aspects of the app that may be improved I for one would like to extend the heartiest congratulations to the new scientist team over the miracle of content and packaging that every issue of New Scientist is Detailed and thorough yet in a language that talks straight to the reader without oversimplifying or over complicating the content Best of luck with maintaining that magical balance in these fast moving times                 Content at the cutting edge
Just enough coverage to keep up with ongoing developments across many fields along with leads for further followup where desiredNew Scientist is my favorite overview of the sciences                 Just right
Ive been reading New Scientist for over a decade Digital distribution through Zinio was bad the Reed Publications dedicated app is far worse The app kept forgetting I was a subscriber renewals shorted my subscription by a few weeks shy of a year repeatedly My subscription expiration was confused with a gift subscription I gave The app finbaly refused to allow me to register the day I renewed as did the website Reed Publications tech support promised to extend my subscription by a few weeks to make up to me the hours of frustrationdozens of hours on hold and numerous conversations having to explain my situation from scratch instead they set the end date for my subscription a year short You cant make this stuff up It took several days of phone calls to finally iron it out but the jig is up for this awful company A magazine this good doesnt deserve to be distributed by an organization this bad     Great magazine terrible distributor
I have been a huge fan of New Scientist for years I love the app                 Greatest science mag ever
I have been a New Scientist subscriber for awhile and had previously used this app with success to download my issues but it has suddenly stopped working with the November 14th issue I contacted them through the chat feature of the website on Friday 15 November and the matter was referred somewhere else I still have no access it is now the 19th and have had no word from New Scientist recontacting the chat provided no answer So I have to say that this app is currently nonfunctional at least for me so I advise everyone to BEWARE     App quit working
Great depth and scope of articles up to date news and explained in terms a novice in any field could understand Great for staying up to date with the scientific community                 Must have magazine for the science enthusiast
For years i was a print subscriber always enjoying my weekly science fix The only downside besides the inevitable cost was the overhead in the evergrowing stockpile of printed matter i had to get through I took a crack at using the Zinio version the print version delivered as what is likely a PDF but even on the iPad the reading experience was awkward and on my mobile it was a pain Besides sidestepping Apples complex and poorlymanaged subscription system this app gives you a mobileoptimised view that isnt crap its different than the print version but you quickly get used to it with hyperlinked content and all at close to half the price of either print or Zinio Plus i can take as long as i want to work through my backlog of partiallyread issues P                 Definitely worth the plunge
I waited a long time for this app New Scientists alternative electronic versions are clunky and large The iPad version is much better Unfortunately purchasing it doesnt allow access to the web based archives If that wrinkle could be ironed out this would be a 5 star app           Almost worth the wait
but 4 star app My only complaint is not having the option of seeing issues in magazine page layout as well as the app screen layout Other than that I highly recommend the magazine and the app              Five Star Magazine
The content is exceptional The app is not spectacular but it does the job well of presenting each issue in a very readable way                 Excellent App
Marvelous                 New Scientist is uniquely informative and balanced Superb
When I dont feel like reading a jargonheavy scholarly journal articles on topics I am not an expert in magazines like this fill the void I LOVE the digital format of NS which is more like an ebook than a PDF which is difficult to read on an iPhone I can catch up at any time anywhere                 Convenient
This is not an app It is only viewable if you pay for subscription and use newsstand     Not an app
New scientist magazine is the perfect source for the academic writer It is a challenging read Great and non biased news reports                 Fun interesting
New Scientist is on of the better designed and delivered periodicals available from the iOS Newsstand Its amazing how many designers fail to include text size and kerning when porting a magazine into a digital format Highly recommend other publishers pay attention to the New Scientist                 Great Usability
I have had many hours of reading good scientific journalism The quality of writing usually very good and I like that many of the articles come in nice digestible packages                 Always illuminating
After a few years of being teased by their emails I subscribed I love the mag and I was pleasantly surprised that I could access back issues too Great stuff here                 Love the Magazine
The magazine works ok while online However when offline almost none of the links work because the content is not included in the saved copy on the iPad Sorry but I would expect that the digital copy of the magazine include the New Scientist context at the least I would also expect that third party content be licensed to be included with the digital version as well           Only soso
Im really liking this app              A really nice app for a great magazine
Dont get me wrong New Scientist magazine is the best read Informative fascinating amusing and mindblowing But this app is just plain bad Let me list the ways 1 No place saving in an issue Close the app and where were you Hope you remembered 2 Doesnt save subscription information so you have to log in again for each new issue 3 No ability to delete individual issues Are you kidding me 4 Table of contents is by category and not sequential Very confusing 5 Not organized in same order as print edition Did anyone show this to the production editor 6 Sometimes new issues just dont appear Please Hire a better developer     The worst app for the best magazine
What good is an app that takes your money then refuses you access to the content     Does not recognize my paid subscription
Well organized and good graphics                 Better than Print
The only thing I can think I would be nice to include would be a search option that covers all dates and issues Similar to the websites              Very good
New Scientist content is sharp Its uptodate and achieves a great balance of intelligent explanation and handholding Enjoyable and valuable content                 Not too hot not too cold just right
Very convenient                 Excellent app
This app is one of the worst and most annoying out there I am guessing it was done by a staff intern and it was his first Here are some things that will drive you crazy 1 Make sure you remember your username and password because you have to reactivite your subscription every week 2 Make sure you remember what article you were reading because this app loses your place routinely 3 Hope you like 3 inches of pointless white space in your columns of text 4 I assume the magazines art director and production editor have never seen this app And visa versa 5 The app developer has taken a thoughtful layout and created his own menu This means the editorials are near the end rather than at the start as they should be Heres the good news this app loads in Newsstand     Great magazine Horrible app
The magazine has always been very interesting but the app makes it more available to read and at a decent price                 Better than I expected
At 2pop who can complain Furthermore with constraints on time missing the odd issue no longer leads to a pile of unread mags littering up the office Finally having quasipermanent digital access to stuff which would otherwise be hopelessly lost inside a wobbling stack of paper has to be a useful example of entropy decay                 Bargain price issues
Great overall app Pretty straight forward and easy to use It would be nice to be able to bookmark sections you like for later reading Secondly it would be nice if it was able to be read in portrait mode              Almost Perfect
NewScientist is so fun                 I luv
I love the content its great My problem is with the app not the quality of the articles The app is functional but needs UI improvements and iPhone 66 Plus support        Needs better UIUX
This is a decent app with one big extremely irritating flaw it cant remember where you left off reading           Decent with Serious Flaw
As a long time reader who has saved decades of issues Im finding the delta reduction massvolume bitspicometer3 vs paperinkcarbon footprintm3 to be proportionally accretive to key quality of life indicators ie Reduced tripping hazards in the less cluttered home improved cohabitant relations etc Thank you                 New Scientist rocks
After two talks with CSRs still unable to log in The email and password which was recorded and entered by my password manager is still not recognized The message directs me to the New Scientist website where I am greeted by a beta site on which the button that should en the log in dialogue box is dead Pretty crappy performance for a magazine that reports on science and technology     Not much to go on
Easy to read However it could have been as good as that of the Economist app or the app used by Vanity Fair Being a science mag available at a reasonable price this app is pretty good indeed              Great app
As in much better than the print version Why Because all the references within articles are hyperlinks taking me to the original research papers                 Outstanding
I used to read the print version which was very nice Great format Thoughtful layout Restful on the eyes while I lay on the couch The app loses all that Makes it just like browsing a bunch of random articles on a website The Newsstand version also doesnt include the intro page from the editor I liked that page a lot The Zinio version was much better If I can I will switch back to Zinio It looks like the magazine The Zinio version also allows emailing a text version of the complete article whereas the Newsstand version only sends you to the link on the web and it may only give you the first paragraph or two           Not nearly as nice a read as the print version or even Zinio
Vast improvement over Zinio Easy to read online or not easy to manage storage                 Good app
I subscribe to the print edition for 150 dollars per year which gives me access to the web edition So why pay more for this app     Worthless
When I took this subscription I had to activate the app which I was successfully able to accomplish However now Im being asked to reactivate the app again When I use the same email address and password that I used with the first activation the it no longer works Customer service is unable to respond in a timely fashion The other thing I am disappointed with is the quality of the content of this magazine The articles are superficial and are written more as opinion pieces than as true educational articles I will not be renewing my subscription        Frustrating
