Joy of Cooking, the first cookbook in every kitchen, is now the must-have app for every cook experts and beginners alike. Based on the latest edition of the bestselling and best-loved, 1,132-page book, the app ...
A simple yet informative cook book that is well though out and executed Best money I have spent in the app store in a long time                 Great cook book better app
Very well organized and easy to use                 Great app
has great features and might be good BUT first time I used it carrot cake didnt taste right Found out recipe was NOT the same as in my Joy book Havent used app since wont trust again Dont care about the nice features if the recipes arent good My respect for Irma higher than ever tho        Nice but
Its hard to improve on a classic but this app sure does it and more I cherish my Joy of Cooking book for all of the memories it brings back of cooking with my mother This app makes all of those recipes relevant again Its simple and easy to use and the photos are great Im inspired to make the delicious brownies cockaigne again and look forward to discovering some untried recipes                 A polished gem
Joy of Cooking has been my goto cookbook for years They have done a nice job with this app The navigation is really easy and all my old favorites are there I love the voice control so you dont have to touch the screen and the help made it really easy to learn everything Two little suggestions would be please allow conversions to dry weight for flour and sugar Also I would appreciate a tab showing the recipe description from the original cookbook                 Well designed app
Based on the inferior 2006 edition instead of the truly excellent 1997 edition the Joy of Cooking app is decent as a reference but terrible for browsing or inspiration and is missing the interesting and tasty additions found in the 1997 edition of the book           Adequate but not excellent
My mother taught home economics and her favorite cookbook was The Joy of Cooking My sisters and I are as devoted to the Joy of Cooking as she was For awhile Id been wishing for an electronic form of the Joy of Cooking I downloaded it as soon as I discovered it and it has far exceeded my expectations In addition to containing nearly all the recipes from over the years the features included are thoughtful and easy to use For instance ingredients in all recipes are crossreferenced so you can read about them Other features include a builtin timer function a grocery list a converter tool from US to metric measurements and a way to add notes for each recipe If you use the Joy of Cooking this app is essential                 Essential
This is an excellent execution of a timeless classic as an app Have Joy with you in your iPhone and iPad wherever you go Easy to use great features Great value for the asking price                 Nicely Done
I expected more receipts for the price App is difficult to navigate around and find what little content there is     What
I am loving this app Within minutes of downloading it my daughter called to request our family favorite Joy of Cooking 7 Minute Icing recipe A search for 7 minute brought it right up and rather than having to scan the recipe or type it out I simply emailed it to her I was so impressed I immediately bought the app for my sister                 Digital access to Joy of Cooking is fabulous
1951 joy of cooking is great These Bowdlerized ethnic things and laughable nutritional advice are a waste of space Nice as a searchable resource for occasional use 1951 would be better        I wont delete
Im glad to see this cookbook finally in an app and generally it does what you expect There are a couple of features that are missing however 1 Shopping Lists do not sync from one device to another So when youre planning that nice meal on your iPad before shopping you should be able to see the Shopping List on your iPhone at the grocery That should also apply to syncing favorites and ribbons 2 Shopping Lists cannot do multiples So if youre making a double batch of something there is no way to 2X those items in the list Please fix these two features Long term it would be nice to do a onebutton convert from American volume measures to European weights This would make bread making and other recipes much more accurate              Mostly Great
Joy of Cooking is not my favorite alltime cookbook but it has been a kind of baseline of American cooking for the last eighty years Its been always there in the background throughout my own sixty years of eating my mother used as her basic goto cookbook for most everything my wife and I have used it weve given copies to several of our kids when they left home It doesnt offer the same kind of nuanced teaching as say Julia Childs Mastering the Art of French Cooking but what it lacks in depth it makes up for in breadth Just about anything youre minded to cook will be somehow represented in this book ranging from the obvious eg boiling an egg to the fairly outoftheway Never skinned a rabbit Heres how with pictures Even Child herself consulted Joy of Cooking and famously met with Rombauer The book has undergone a number of revisions and has changed somewhat with the times dialing back the alcohol here and putting more emphasis on vegetables that dont come out of a can over there Its weathered pretty well and its adapted admirably to changing conditions of our culinary culture The present app is striking for two signal reasons First of all it contains not just some cherrypicked selections of favorites from Joy of Cooking but the complete collection of recipes it is not just a showpiece its a robust useful reference If that were all it did it would be worth what theyre asking for it it costs less than the hardbound copy it takes up infinitely less space on the bookshelf and its consummately portable I dont think Ive ever taken a paper copy of Joy to the grocery store with me but I never go without my iPhone Sometimes you see something and think How would I cook that Now you can find out Second however in an day where many people rush apps to market that are little more than clunky hardtomanipulate versions of the books on which theyre based or else full of misprints from a bad scanning job this is an absolute standout The integration of the user interface is as elegant as any Ive seen The presentation is clear ingredient lists are crosslinked seamlessly to the About sections for each type of ingredient quantities are linked to measurementconversion popups All this is accomplished within a flexible seamless user interface There are complete and exact instructions a way to select among several optional ingredients automatic generation of shopping lists and more Im a cook and a programmer among other things and Im not overly easy to impress on either front This has impressed me on both Its a solid exceptionally useful piece of work Im keeping it loaded on my iPhone and iPad                 Getting it Right
thanks guys you nailed it                 great
I would like to be able to add items to the shopping list Because I also need random other stuff when I go shopping              Great app
Because its not in this app I was looking forward to a digital version of my goto cookbook the 1997 New Joy of Cooking I wanted to bookmark my many favorites explore new recipes from other editions But CulinateScribeners didnt include it another reviewer is rightits the best edition I gave two stars for how wellthought out the app is Would have given 5 had the content been complete        Dont get rid of your 1997 edition
Pretty photos for selecting recipes unable to search rendering app utterly useless to me     No longer working
This is not only the best cooking app it may be one of the best apps ever I use my 2006 edition of Joy of Cooking a lot but have always been frustrated with the layout The layout of this app is amazing The links to other recipes the steps the link from ingredients to a shopping cart are all wonderful This is an app Steve Jobs would have been excited about All current and future cooking apps have a high standard to reach                 The Gold Standard
Ive always liked the Joy of Cooking Cookbook and this app seems to have everything at my finger tips It has great features like a timer and a setting to stop sleep mode What I dont like about it is that the app is very slow to respond after launching it This is a significant problem Also lets say you are making a recipe like blueberry muffins The instructions say make basic muffin recipe first so you follow the recipe and then it states that you need to adjust the sugar measurement for the recipe It should tell me what the change is before it points me to the basic recipe        Poor performance
Great app Ive finally moved into the 21st century My 1967 copy of Joy of Cooking is officially retired This new digital version has so much more to offer and the guides make it easy to navigate A comprehensive well designed cooking app                 A Valuable App for All Cooks
Ill start by saying that my Joy that is the one I grew up with is the two volume paperback printing from the 70s that was based on the 1963 edition of the book which my mother purchased from my grade school book club This electronic edition is expertly executed allowing quick navigation bookmarking contains links between recipes and allows you to put in your own notes about each recipe all while remaining true to the original vision of Joy All of the best recipes are there updated as needed along with some new ones Special sections are included for Joy Classic recipes culled from all Joy editions and for some of the authors family favorites This is either an excellent edition all by itself or a great companion to the previous what I consider still relevant editions of Joy those published in 2006 1975 and 1963 My thanks to the publisher and to the family for keeping this book alive more than 80 years since it was first compiled                 Excellent edition that works great on ipad
If youre a Joy cookbook user like I am then this app is a must It has all the recipes tips and pointers that the original book has It has been an absolute Joy word play to use I purchased this app as a gift to myself for thanksgiving and have used it so many times I have always given the book as a wedding gift to newlyweds this app is a wonderful update to give to the new generation of iPad and iPhone users now that its been updated into a digital version It is clear concise and extremely easy to use a must in any recipe collection for any iPad or iPhone user who uses their device as a recipe cookbook This app has proven to be very worthy of money I paid for which was discounted as a special however I do feel that it would be worth every penny at full price and I would have paid full price with no questions asked A wonderful wonderful app to have in my collection of cookbooks actually to be honest with you I removed all the cookbooks and I only use this one I use this app basically on a daily basis I highly highly recommend this app for anyone who is a novice or midterm or professional it has many point is to success to help you learn and understand things that Ive been doing for many years and have added two I have three copies of joy in my collection hardcopy recipe cookbooks two of which I have received his gift and will always keep in my collection hardcovers are nice however I find the digital version to be extremely handy at times with built in timers built in recipe selections it gives you the steps to do it gives you a grocery list application section that you can create a grocery list to get the items you need next time you go grocery shopping that has proven extremely helpful Now breakdown and just buy the app you know you want it you know you can use it and you know you will use it get it                 Best of the Best
Love that I can access my favorite cookbook anywhere now                 Awesome
The Joy of cooking is a long time tradition in our family I was so anxious to get the app I got it as soon as it came out However I found that my iPad was too old to display it What a disappointment However I was finally able to get a new iPad and I tried out the app I think theyve done a wonderful job Its got so many features I cant wait to try and as many as possible My one disappointment was that there didnt seem to be a way to slow down the verbal instructions At my age I forget the list of ingredients quickly I had to replay it many times in order to get all of them and be able to measure them before I forgot what they were Perhaps there might be a way to have an option where you could slow down the rate they read each section of the instructions Other than that everything seems great and I hope its a big success Im sure a lot of people will be giving this as a gift during the holiday season                 Couldnt wait
Translating a cookbook to digital from print is very difficult to get right we read them differently The Science of Good Cooking by the Cooks Illustrated folks a fantastic book did not take the transformation well What additional information does the reader want and is it easy to get there and back The Joy of Cooking people have evidently put a lot of thought into it The table of contents or a particular portion of it is always there as are links to appropriate howto sections The screen is clean while managing to provide a wealth of information I grew up with various editions of this cookbook and my current one is like all the others stained and falling apart from much use I never thought Id like a digital edition nearly as well but this one is great Well done Joy of Cooking                 eCookbook done right
Really great app Im diggin the interface And the recipes Exactly what youve come to expect from the classic Joy of Cooking perfect                 Wow
Doing justice to the Joy is no minor feat Without dumbing it down or sacrificing depth this app brings the classic kitchen standby into our era Will be spending lots of time with this elegant app                 A worthy heir
From my original 5th edition that I wheedled out of a friend to the Anniversary edition Ive used the Joy of Cooking for many years I was curious enough when I saw the app that I didnt wait for a lot of reviews Why If it did nothing else than give me a handy portable version I could leaf through without sticking the pages together or take to the store with me it would be worth it It is far more than that How cool to be able to use it without wiping your hands off How handy it will be to stay focused on what Im doing and have it talk me through the steps If nothing else the ability to wander through the store and check a quick recipe for something on sale will more than pay for it Well done                 5th Edition
Dont think of this app as just a cookbookit is so much more The navigation is quick easy and flawless The app has many features you might expect create menus even on your own calendar build grocery lists conversions substitutions ability to add notes to recipes bookmarks handy for jumping between multiple recipes while cooking and favorites However there are some features that set this app among the best apps Timersyou can instantly set timers when you come to them in the recipe you can have multiple timers activated Block sleep mode so the device stays on while you are cooking Read mode will actually read each step of the recipe to you Command recognition allows you to speak and navigate through the steps of the recipe This saves you from having to touch the screen if you hands get messy while preparing the recipe Each step is highlighted so you can keep track of where you are You can highlight it with a simple tap or a voice command If you are familiar with the book form you will recall the numerous references to other parts of the book This are all linked making it effortless to jump to the reference read it and get back to your recipe There are plenty of other well thought out features you can read about in the How to use this app section of the app If you loved the book you will love the app even more                 Most Amazing App
There are many recipes and they are recipes that you will want to make not just to show how the application works or to look nice The inapp purchases are minor and are grouped so that you can get those recipes that you want                 Excellent User Friendly Application
Finally have my hands on the knowledge that this book has given cooks for years                 A must needed app for all cooks
Awesome I am impress 5                 Really good
The Joy is now usable and searchable on my iPad Time to discover it all over again                 A great standard now in a great app
App would not open after installation After deleting several times it finally opens Hope the recipes found in my hardback version are found in the digital version           Early Review
Navigable in a way that the text has never been but with the integrity thats customary of the great classic                 Superb and Interactive
For months Id been searching for a Joy of Cooking book in iBooks with no joy haha Now its this fantastic iPad app Bravo                 Cooking done right
Great photos easy navigation and great features I dont usually pay for apps but this was well worth the money                 Amazing App
I love having the joy of cooking on my iPad This app and how it has been produced seems very elementary and I would expect a much more professional presentation of this book and because of the price of the app It needs a lot of work and I look forward to all of those updates and for your continued improvements        Needs improvement
As my hardcover copy of this timeless classic book has stated to fall apart with age and use this couldnt have come any come any sooner Recipes that let you pick and choose alternate ingredients and addons all of which get added to the grocery list with everything else you need to make the perfect meal for fiends Spot on guys                 The app Ive been waiting for
I love this app but it would be nice if every recipe had a picture But other then that this app is great              So worth the buy in my opinion
I am LOVING this digital version of the original I have the original book that my mother bought when it was first published way before I was born 40 years ago Its nice to be able to give that old book a rest This digital version makes finding everything easy including recipes of course but also substitutions and the about ingredients part I learned more cooking experience in my life from this book than ANY other book or app Ive purchased over the years Plus these are the recipes that grandma used to make I dont know if anyone has had problems with the app but I havent havent experienced any problems whatsoever Thanks for bringing this ol relic back to life                 Brings Back Memories
Nothing but pictures of food No words No recipes The food pictures are lovely though I paid three dollars for them Now it has recipes Good app              Bad app
Ive been a devoted fan of Joy of Cooking for more than two decades Always my goto gift for a new bride someone who purchased their first home and just when it was the right time for gift giving Considered my personal cooking bible Im thrilled to combine my passion for cooking and utilize this splendid app along with my iPad for countless hours of culinary pleasure Such a brilliant time we live in to enjoy technology and cooking together Well done M                 Spectacular
Ive so far cooked the spaghetti pie recipe which was great and will be making again I think its a great big selection of recipes for the price Also for the price of one you get an iPad and iPhone version which both are fantastically optimized and run smoothly I use an iPhone 6 and 4th gen ipad Ive always wanted to get the joy of cooking book but since I saw the app I much prefer this The interface is very clean and intuitive Easy to get around Only things that would be nice Sync shopping lists across devices I would like to be able to add stuff to my list on the iPad and sync it to my iPhone when I go to the store More pictures please                 Best cooking app out there
Ordinary recipes that can be found many other places Ingredients include canned soup     Nothing special
Once in awhile I look elsewhere just to compare Variety is wholesome And once in awhile basics are lacking Surprise Wheres Salisbury Steak              Good reference The basics I still have to look elsewhere at times
I have been waiting for this digital book for some and glad its finally hear and better than I had hoped for I would have settled for just a straight digital copy Now just to make sure I dont spill on it as I have with my 1997 edition                 Finally the book in ones and zeros
I cant recommend this app enough Its obvious that they spent a huge amount of time perfecting this app and did not spare any effort on ensuring it was perfect First this isnt a cook book this is THE food encyclopedia in addition to containing the recipe for everything ever You wont need to search the Internet for another recipe for a LONG time after you get this app Second the app its self is very well designed The interface is very unique I havent seen one exactly like this one and it works very well It makes it seamless to get to any section of the book and also makes it easy to glance through it and feel like you have an idea of where everything is in the book I cant under state how important this is They could have just made one long list of every section and it would have technically worked but it would not be as user friendly or easy to see the big picture of the book Also the search box is more than a search box More often than not I dont even put words in the search box I simply use the filters to browse recipes This is a great way to find new things to cook Just go to the search tab and click Joy Family recipes from the peoples family Joy Originals recipes from the original 1930s book Asian Chinese Italian Fall Winter quick cooking for a crowd or select the ingredients you have to find recipes with that ingredient As a Software Developer and admittedly one that isnt good at making user interfaces I really appreciate ones done well The timers the shopping list making the links between article and the related recipespages could easily have been done and in a way that they werent very usable but this app pulled them off perfectly This app is really top notch                 Amazing
And it is wellstructured for exploration Before you know it youll be discovering recipes youve never heard of and combinations youve never thought about before And its not just recipes there are fascinating and helpful details about ingredients and techniques too Features like the highlighting of steps and voice commands show that this app was meant for the kitchen I cant wait to use it to cook Its great to see a book with deep roots brought into the app age with such attention to detail Well worth the price                 The most comprehensive cookbook on the app store
What a great job joy of cooking is my modern version of my moms favorite cook book I love the voice command feature my moms book is so dirty from all the use This book and app are essential to anyone who wants learn to cook or perfect their skills I learn something new every time I open this The only thing that I can think of to improve the app is the ability to easily export recipes to other apps like paprika which I use for all of my current recipe collection and grocery list When I am at the store it would be nice to not have to switch between apps for my shopping list Currently to import into paprika I have to email it to myself Copy the text Paste it into paprika Then separate out what I have copied Or attempt to find the recipe online And copy from there But all in all it would be amazing and time saving to just export with everything perfectly done                 The Joy of Cooking has been an essential book to have for every cook now this app is too
