Publisher's description - EarTrumpet
EarTrumpet is a hearing application suite that provides hearing testing and hearing enhancement tools. The hearing enhancer amplifies and adjusts sound to discretely improve hearing via the earphones attached to an iPhone or iPod.
EarTrumpet was created by Allen Foulad, a medical student aspiring to develop a set of comprehensive hearing tools through scientific inquiry and analysis. Collaboration with the Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery department at the University of California, Irvine has provided inspiration and support for the establishment and evolution of this feature-rich mobile application. Preliminary studies have demonstrated the high accuracy of the included hearing test and the benefit of the hearing enhancer. We are now confident in releasing the application for public use. The features will continue to be further refined through clinical studies, leading to increased optimization of the sound processing and hearing testing technology. These tools will pave the way for the addition of numerous innovative features to help promote the health of the ear and to diagnose and treat various ear conditions, such as tinnitus. It is a pleasure to share this application with you. Please do not hesitate to send an email with any questions, concerns, or comments. Together, we will move forward.
Hearing Enhancer Features: * Volume Boost enables intense volume amplification. * Equalizer tool provides precise sound adjustment using preset and custom settings. * Preset equalizer profiles reduce background noise and enhance common frequencies. * Custom equalizer profiles can be created and saved. * Loud sounds can be automatically detected and decreased. * Volume and equalization features can be adjusted separately for the left and right ears.
Hearing Test Features: * Highly accurate results when used per recommendations. * Graphical view of test results. * Text description of results with comments and analysis. * Option to save the results.
Requirements: * Headset. * Devices that do not have built-in microphones (i.e. iPod Touch) require a headset that has a combined microphone. * Using the equalizer feature may lead to choppy sound on older devices. Two frequencies per ear can be adjusted smoothly on the iPhone 3G. Faster devices (iPhone 3GS, 4G) are capable of handling even more frequencies.
Notes: * If you prefer to use your iPhone’s built-in microphone, you must use a headset that does not contain a microphone. * The hearing enhancer does not amplify phone calls. * The application does not currently offer multitasking, bluetooth support, or ability to email hearing test results. These features will be implemented in future versions. * EarTrumpet is not a substitute for professional medical care.

Got a couple good tests out of this app that seem to put me very close to actual audiogram. The app now crashes in the middle of nearly every test. Tried setting auto-lock on phone to never and still crashes. I would highly recommend the app if the bugs are fixed. On IOS 5, iPhone 4s.

Terrific support and a very intriguing and well designed app. I love the hearing test feature to perhaps inform me when I need to break down and get a standard hearing aid. I don`t need one yet and this app may hold it off a few years.
I havent tested it on the field yet but my killer application would be to be able to keep up with business table conversations in loud restaurants and bars. So far the only way for this app (and perhaps others) to use the iPhone body mike as input is to use it with non-miked earbuds else wise the headset mike gets used which is not as close to the speaker. However the application does work with my Bluetooth Plantronics earpiece yet again engages the earpiece mike as input. This is not what I am really after but it is intriguing that my Bluetooth is now a hearing aid of sorts for only $4. Unfortunately the Plantronics has insufficient volume for loud environments. I`m going to continue doing some experimenting with other headsets. Until then just having the hearing test feature and the automatically tuned filter it a terrific gift for those who cannot afford, or don`t want expensive hearing aid equipment with lack of user control.
