Calflora Observer is an app that allows you to quickly and efficiently report wild plant occurrences. This app makes it easy for you to report the species name, date, and location of over 10,000 California ...
To compete with iNaturalist the app of choice for most people who record plant observations Calflora must make three upgrades to this app 1 allow the observer to select photos from Photos that have been edited i will never use this app if I can only make real time observations with no cropping or exposure adjustments in the field 2 allow searching the plant lists to find a species of interest for making an observation having to manually go through the list is a pain 3 add sort options to arrange the plant list by family Great idea lacking basic functionality Cosmic T
A great resource for those who need to report species on the go Thank you Cal Flora Native Plant Rob Wholesome
I am a bit of a sucker for citizen science projects this is one of the better ones I have found It makes hiking in California into a bit of a treasure hunt where you try to find plants you know how to identify On the negative side this is not a project I can hand to my nine year old daughter This one takes an obsessive amount of attention to detail There are thousands of plant species growing in California I am pretty good but I doubt I can identify 200 Unfortunately this app does not help much in making identifications just reporting them It does make reporting plants the second time really simple The first time is a bit clunky because you need to search for the plants scientific name Figuring out the interface the first time is a bit complicated too figuring out how to record notes and take pictures wasn t that obvious It isn t hard though so once you submit three or four plants you can do it in just a few seconds Also it oddly doesn t let you publish directly from the app You need to go online and hit one more button on the Calflora site to actually publish Neat Citizen Science Project Glmory
New upgrades make this app very easy and fun to use Allowing the app to use the iPhoto Library is a major enhancement I recommend using it If there is ever a problem with an upload you will still have your photos with their GPS data This version feels faster and smoother in many ways Even the voice recognition feature on the Notes page feels more responsive although botanical names will always be a problem my iPhone 4S has learned a number of them but it can t seem to learn Elymus Big improvements Lupinus nana hunter
