I give this a 3 of 5 Works fine around town where there is cell coverage Caching maps and imagery does not work so app doesnt perform in the field Charging for maps and imagery is not appropriate as this data is freely available I can not recommend this app           3 of 5

Love this app for keeping track of my hikes Would like to be able to edit routes once they are one                 Great App

I can not tell the difference between the free version and pro version Basically the business model here is to sell trips their editors choose from the free data you give them You would think they would at least let you search the trips that are for sell I do not have a recommendation for another app I just know it is not this one When you do select the map and set it to guide the phone seems to lock up     Get the free version

The most recent update has caused the tracking function to stop completely when I use the camera while tracking a hike This was never an issue until the most recent update After I take a photo it takes my track and blines it directly to the staring point or causes erratic stats drastic elevation changes a hike around a local flat city park loop showed 500 feet of elevation change realistically we are talking more around 1525 feet tops all this seems to be triggered after I take a photo with my iPhone 4S This was never a problem Ive logged hundreds of miles in the northern Sierra using it and was very happy now its basically useless No accurate tracks mileage or elevation profiles all from taking photos with the app running in the background Please fix     Recent Updates causing issues

Helpful to get familiar with new areas              Great for the outdoorsman

I wish I could give this app a higher rating I had high hopes for it but has proved to be a bit more buggy than I hoped I look forward to some updates           Resounding OK

Wanted to preemptively prepare for my trip like the description says but the search function doesnt work at all I cant find my trail let alone any others     Very disappointed

Ive tried several others but this one has been very reliable and most useful of them all                 Best hikingbackpacking GPS app

The limited times Ive tried this app it just doesnt work how Ive imagined I thought I could fine hikes but all it does is find trips others have taken and record mine Not very excited about this        Hard to Search hikes

I just used this app way off the grid in northern Ontario We would have had to sleep in the boat without it We hunted until dark then had to boat 6 miles back to our outpost Backpacker Pro allowed us to find our way in the dark                 Great app

Yet can still find trails by scrolling to area           Great to track your hike not as easy to search for hikes

This app has come a long way from when I first bought it There is a decent database of trails available sadly you may have to pay an annual fee to get access to them Also this app has a horrible flaw it crashes and burns right when you need it most in the backcountry where there is no signal and you really want guidance A fatal flaw in my book Use it for research but DO NOT depend upon it for trail finding Save your money        Could be great but isnt due to crashing issues

This app blows I do backpacking in SoCal and the app doesnt have any topos in the area dont waste your     Bill

Love I can use it off line Maps zoom in well Would give it 5 if not for having to go through iTunes to get the map              GPS Trails

Awesome app Used it for a week of backpacking in the Wind Rivers in Wyoming Had GPS the entire time and no cell signal Tracked exactly where I was how many miles how much elevation gain average speed Nearly everything I wanted Checked it against topo maps and it was always right on I used it with the iPad app first to plan my trip and this one to do the trip Together they are awesome              Backpacker Trails Pro

The free app is great but if you plan on hiking in any remote areas you need to buy the app to cache maps It worked great even in the Grand Canyon just be sure to plan ahead Love the geotagged photos especially since they go to your photo stream And once I upgrade to an iPhone 5 it will get even better photos and battery life Some issues loading maps to the website but overall great app              Must buy for off grid trips

I absolutely love this app My daughter and I just started hiking this year so we lean heavily on information regarding gear hiking locations community safety If there is a better magazine and app I havent found it                 A HIKERS FRIEND for sure

Great for planned outings if you know the names of trails or exactly where you want to hike DEVELOPERS please add the ability to search for trails near my current location or search on a map based on a screen shot or map browsing function This a GPS app right It would be nice to think Wow this area is beautiful I wonder where I could hike around here Pull out this app and search for nearby hikes I like everything else about the app and it is great that I can use it outside of cellphone range           Needs Optimized for Local Trail Searches

I purchased this after seeing I could import backpacking waypoints directly into the application After purchasing the app and proceeding to do this I then found out I also needed to purchase a 10month subscription with Trimble As a professional that spends thousands of dollars on Trimble survey equipment I am livid and upset at the waste of time this caused me and would like a refund I am probably going to move all of my professional business to Leica as a result of this terrible experience     Very Disappointing Feel scammed and just want to hit the trails

I have this app on both my iPad and iPhone Absolutely love it If I could suggest one change it would be to allow the use of other arial maps other than just Bing In some areas Bing doesnt have the best maps                 Most Useful App I have

I love Backpacker magazine but this app is hard to use Try AllTrails        Dont bother

I was quite disappointed to learn that this application is of limited usefulness without an Elite subscription 3month I thought thats why I bought this 5 pro version Dont be fooled like I was to download detailed maps or to download Backpacker magazine trips you need to be an Elite member        Caution need to buy elitesubscription to fully use this app

Last several trips I have been on there is no satellite coverage of large portions of the trailstrange because Sirius and Garmin still work As a result there are several missing portions of each trip that the app simply connects with straight lines Even though I have tried several trips have not been consolidated and saved to the app Overall cumbersome and useless I do not recommend this appit is fluff if you are a serious hikerbackpacker        Not a great appdont know why I got it

Whatever you do DO NOT LOOSE YOUR PASSWORD There will be NO ONE to help you Going on 4 weeks with numerous email to try and reset my password I paid for the app on my phone AND iPad AND have downloaded and paid for numerous back issues Its hard NOT to say there in it for the money     CUSTOMER SERVICE DOES NOT EXIST

The app crashed almost every time i use it It also has problems downloadinguploading trip data        Crashes often download problems

Combined review of this and Map Maker Pro for Ipad Capability to store map tiles on phone is very nice feature Needs a tile management feature however for PC or iPad cuz I have lost bubble on what I have Needs a scale bar on all map displays The inability to draw a proposed route on iPad or pc mentioned by others A very nice App all in all              Almost great

If I could give this app less than a 1 star rating I would I cant even use it to search whats near me and whats the deal with paying for a hike you can find just as easily on the Internet I got it as a matter of convenience but it has been worthless to me     Very very poor

Hard to find trails close by and app handles a little slow           Nice but

It seems I can only search within 20 miles or nation wide Many search results are apparently trails by random idiots with titles like Work which had a length of 0km Need to be able to search by area like a state or park or geographic feature like Hood Canal Maybe Im just clueless but intuitive and useful are not two descriptors I would use for this app at this time     Search Function is Useless

Works well to track your route but very difficult to use interface Highly nonintuitive as to getting to the function you want use           Not at all intuitive

Very glitchy and slow had paid 99 cents for a similar app that does more has now features and is much much faster I should have known better as I tried the trimble one first launched my backpacker that crashed my comp constantly save your money theres better and cheaper apps that do a great job        Poor and disappointing

Save your money This app is a not with the effort it takes to install it No intuitive at all Difficult to save waypoints or preplan trips Like most Trimble products not very nimble     Cumbersome

Ive been told for two months now that the app was being fixed so I could use the search trip function Summer is now almost over and it has done me no good as searching for hikes in specific locations was my main purpose for buying it     Dont waste your money

The perfect substitute for the leisure hiker who wants to track their adventures While certainly not as accurate as a handheld GPS this app certainly gets the job done              Great outdoor tool

When searching for a trip theres not enough filters Would like to see state and difficulty options Also after search results do come up you have no idea where they are Nothing lists how far or what state the trip is in Third would be nice if there was a map of the searched trip Unless theres specific direction in the description how are you supposed to find the trail head Disappointed is all I can say           Needs More Work
