The Straits Times for iPad

Crashes regularly and doesnt remember where you left off Even when you are using the app and the iPad goes to standby you need to relaunch the app and select the newspaper and manually find the page you left off I mean have you EVER seen a reading app that doesnt remember where you left off     Buggy and dumb

Interface is not intuitive panes are overlapping and epaper takes a long time to load The app was not able to detect I am a subscriber after the update I had to log out and in again There are loads of apps eg nytimes which are friendly and easy to use compared to this Please just bring back the previous version or dont force the update It was basic and primitive but at least it works     Just bring back the previous version

STs app is a joke Reasons why 1 Crashes constantly 2 Every update brings more ads but never does anything to improve stability 3 Reading articles in landscape mode will sometimes not show page two but anther ad then the next article 4 Does not remember which article you last read so youll be bumped back to home screen every fking time you leave the app even for a second And the worse of all being the only fullfledged newspaper publication in Singapore they have no inclination to make any improvements to it As subscribers its a take it or leave it situation     Crappy app

If you compare your iPad app against other leading newspapers apps eg WSJ or NY Times you will realize that your app falls short One I think its time the iPad and iPhone apps are incorporated into Apples Newsstand feature This allows the app to download the news automatically each time new content is available Two your full page ads are very invasive never mind that subscribers already pay on a regular basis For example when I swipe sideways to get to the next article or page the ad comes at me right in the face Worse still sometimes when I swipe lefttoright to revisit an article on a previous page the ad appears and Im hard pressed to close it And when I do close the ad the ST app forgets I had originally wanted to go back to the previous page and so it brings me back to the current page This disrupts and destroys the entire reading experience        Compared with peers app falls short

I have never wrote a review but felt compelled to do so Crashes extremely frequently I cant finish reading the days paper without it crashing at least 3 to 4 times Absolutely unacceptable horrendous frustrating Paid for a subscription and yet ST provides one of the most unstable unusable app Shame on you If I can rate it zero star I would Unfortunately one star is the minimum Prepare to yank your hair out while reading     Horrible

Did the upgrade for ios7 for my new iPhone 5s Works fine there but when I upgraded my iOS on my iPad 3 the apps keeps prompting for iTunes connection for sending badge notifications repeatedly Cannot exit the app subsequently and have to reset the iPad I think its a bug        The app for IPad crashes with iOS 7

The app is great for reading the newspaper for which I have an iPad subscription The app keeps abruptly exiting and is unstable very often The developer refuses to acknowledge the problem        App review

Used to be able to flip between articles in the Print edition by swiping left or right Now after reading an article have to tap Done then scan the article listing to find the next article This is very very very inconvenient and breaks the flow of reading Flipping between articles should have been a fundamental user interface feature     Print edition cannot flip between articles

Apart from the stability improvements FINALLY this new app presents a worse experience for those who just want to read the ePaperPDF version Here are my top friction points so far 1 WHY does the seek barpage navigatorslider appear at the bottom of the screen whenever I flip a page It takes up a huge portion of the screen and is extremely distracting This is coming from a reader who just wants to read from cover to cover How many readers of the PDF version want to jump around to different sections of the newspaper after flipping EACH AND EVERY page Such users would be better served by the Print Edition or My News sections of the app instead If I do actually want to bring up the page navigator I should only have to tap once anywhere on the screen Dont make it pop up every single time I turn a page 2 When tapping once anywhere on the screen to bring up the options why does the top menu bar which only contains the date and the back button have to push the entire screen downward Cant the top bar just be an overlay like the seek bar at the bottom Again it is extremely distracting to have different interface elements popping up at the top and bottom of the screen and the whole screen shifting up and down Especially since it is very easy to accidentally invoke these menus by single tapping 3 Please restore the old apps doubletap zoom behaviour double tapping once should zoom in double tapping while zoomed in should zoom out Having two zoom levels might sound good in theory if this were the ONLY means of zooming in but when the two zoom levels are used in conjunction with pinchtozoom there are many use cases where this combination fails For example I doubletap zoom to get a closer look at the headlines on a page Next I pinch to zoom in closely on an article After reading the article I double tap again the expected behaviour at this point is to zoom out but instead it zooms in again to the second zoom level Id have to double tap a THIRD time for it to finally zoom out The worse case example is when I pinch to zoom in all the way Then in order to zoom out without having to do another pinch gesture Id have to double tap THREE times And because the zoom level is already at the maximum the first two double taps dont even do anything Very unintuitive Furthermore there seems to be a bug related to pinch zooming If you zoom in by pinching only not double tapping tapping once to bring up the options will cause you to zoom out completely This does not happen if you double tap to zoom 4 Further to point no 3 double tapping does not zoom in on the tapped region Instead taptozoom always zooms in to the centre of the screen no matter where you tapped In the old app if I double tapped the bottom right corner for example it would zoom in to that area     Poor PDF reader

Using the new version is such a pain I thought the old version was bad as it crashes often flipping pages was a bit slow But the new version is so sluggish rendering each new page that I just had to write a feedback about it On my iPad 3 I used to be able to flip through pages fairly OK Not very fast but still bearable I was able to glimpse at the overall page see the photos read the main article headline text flip the page Maybe takes about 1 or 2 seconds each page Now each page takes a few seconds to render before I can even read the article headline or see the photos It is really very frustrating In the old version the page slider at the bottom shows the thumbnail image of each page I could use that to quickly jump to any page I want The new version doesnt have this feature Please improve on the page rendering speed bring back the thumbnail image for page slider improve on the doubletap zoom so that it zooms in to the place I doubletap Thanks        New Version Slow Laggy Sluggish

Crap App despite good content When is it good to fix     Crash Daily

If only I could give negative rating Crashes at least 3 to 5 times while trying to read Wont auto update PDF version while I read the iPods version Developer team deserves to travel in a train or in an elevator or drive a car or receive power supply in a similar crash 3 times daily manner     Buggy

All in all this is a pretty crap app It crashes often somehow uncashes and loses editions already downloaded and sometimes downloads the wrong days edition Also it takes forever to download an edition     Pretty crap app

What is the point of an app that crashes 10 out of 10 times Why is downloading the print version such a tortured unpredictable experience for the user Why does the ad load effortlessly while the actual paper crashes continually like a house of cards in a hurricane And this ad is in addition to the other multiple ads displayed in the print version it appears before youre allowed to read even a single page Is money the only thing important to the company what about your paying subscribers Why hasnt the crashing been fixed even after so many years and multiple app updates I suspect they update the app if only to wipe clean all the negative reviews Update wipe repeat and voila a cleanly reviewed app Bravo straits Times Deviousness at its most Machiavellian     Shame on you Straits Times

Any updates Ive seen so far make the app have more and more interactive ads rather than making it any better to solve the bugs reported That is how bad its And the ads are excessive and interrupts reading This is a paid for subscription on a monthly basis but the number of ads is as much as a free app Disappointed But as the only paper approved by the Singapore government I foresee the problem is not going to go away anytime soon     Laggy and crashed often
