OnSwitch for Philips Hue

There are two things I want in a Hue controller app easy setup and lots of tasteful flowing color transitions that are subtle and creative The official Philips Hue app is fine if you want static color sets but completely useless if you want to take advantage of one of Hues biggest strengths animated lighting A number of apps allow animation but are too complex to set up usually without clear instructions too short on preprogrammed options and too fiddly in UI Often preset color transitions seem brought to you by the primary color wheel and that Pokemon cartoon that caused epilepsy OnSwitch cuts through all that with a simple and logical UI although that does restrict controllable options to setting up light groups and assigning each group a single preset animation or purchased animations funded by reasonably priced micropayment transactions You can control the relative brightness of each light group but thats it There are also a variety of free nonanimated light settings such as skylight or antique which are very pleasant and utilitarian plus two grouped sets of static colored lighting accent lighting and tinted lighting If you want more color control on the static options the Philips app makes more sense But OnSwitch really comes into its creative and tasteful own with the animated settings each categorized into groups with evocative titles like Love Fire and flowing nature also the obligatory sunrisesunset timer animations The Christmas group also has some pleasing effects and was free for a month or so last year allowing a try before you buy There are between 4 and 6 separate animations per group As an example the recently created Fire group has four animations candlelight fire cinders and blowtorch which provides some pleasantly fuzzy soft blue effects When the company behind the Goldee app closed its doors OnSwitch is the only option Ive found that suitably fills the niche Goldee left My bucket wishlist for the app would include 1 More control over the total brightness of each set or even better control over individual bulb brightness 2 A trybeforeyoubuy option for the animations would be nice but you can buy them individually or as a group for about three bucks so it is not like you are out by much and I havent been disappointed so far by any of my purchases 3 The ability to change the speed of the transitions Its still getting five stars though because of the thought that went into the animation plus the fact that it fills a major hole in the Hue app market one that really shows off the conceptual strength and value that these bulbs provide Great job OnSwitch                 Lots to love about this subtle flowing lighting app for all moods

This app is the best way to control your hue lights                 Simple and clean

Had this app through several updates Like them however the pricing structure is too high 199 or 299 for one light choice Horrendous How about one time 599 for all lights in that update then 199 when there is another with several new light choices           Good Features Horrible Pricing

Can not set timers so lights go on at a certain time of the day and off at a certain time of day Bummer Had to delete this app because of that     Cool colors but no timers

The latest update that occurred on August 26 has managed to knock out my apps ability to communicate with any of my lightbulbs The app cannot locate any of the bulbs What happened        The latest version of the app doesnt work

This app is loaded with individually locked scenes that cost one or two dollars each and cant be hidden Suddenly all the lights in your own home are constantly trying to rip you off     Expensive beyond the basics

Free app is great BUT KEEP READING The paid things are completely stupid I hope the developers are looking at this review and trying to make up for the stupid options they ask money for when you can get them for free in a multitude of Hue and LIFX apps You make developers everywhere so sadwhy are you so poopiesorry had to substitute for the word I was looking for since it was VULGAR        Dont pay a cent

Up until recently the color flow transitions worked fine on my Hue system Now it works for one second and stops Restarting my router and resetting the Philips bridge does not resolve the issue nor does changing the ZigBee channel Its a shame because this was a great app        Stopped working

I learned to not update this app before I just did and now it cannot add any lights to the groups It wont operate lights Every group said no bulbs in group and I cant add them Then I reconnected the bridge and it just crashes after selecting any group and executing a command Ive spent about 15 on inapp purchases How about dont update this until you test it Ruined my night     Bad update Again

Its totally unclear how to set a sleep timer     Useless totally nonintuitive UI

I like this app the most out of the third party Hue apps Easily navigable operates smoothly and tons of creative light scenes Its biggest shortcoming is the widget users need to be able to select scenes from the widget and dim from the widget If it could do those things Id never even use the official Hue app              App is great widget needs more

So far this has worked great I havent used anything but their settings so far which are really cool I still need to figure out how to program what I want too              Better than my old app
