This app is great and Id recommend it to anyone whether you call yourself a birder or are just getting into it There are many different ways to figure out the ID through various characteristics it makes it fun If you are interested in fish ID as well you cant beat his app for that either just get both and youre all set for your explorations in Hawaii Awesome app to learn Hawaiis birds Be sure to get his Fish ID one too
Could use some overall polishing Does have all endemic birds but format is a strange PDF like format Bird calls section is just a link to a website which opens in safari that is very disappointing This app would gain one star if calls were internal to the app and did not require Internet access Remaining star would require better interface similar to other birding apps think nat geo birds or ibird pro and a little more information density Decent overview of hawaiian birds
Excellent use of technology to link video photos and textual info in an easy to use package Videos of the birds are great entertainment Hawaii Birds
I have two other bird ID apps Petersen Audubon Petersen includes Hawaii in its list of states but lacks Hawaiian native birds I think it has only birds shared with the mainland ie introduced Audubon doesnt mention Hawaii So I was happy to finally find a Hawaiian birds app And its well designed Happy with this app
There are some nice pictures to use for ID But I am very disappointed that there is not a checklist as part of the app When you select checklist the app opens an external website using the browser Limits usefulness in the field since I rarely have an internet connection when out birding Ok pics for ID but checklist not part of app
All native birds of main islands included as well as the majority of introduced species Basic info on each bird is comparable to the ID books Format resembles a nicely designed ebook with flippable pages but retains ability to browse by color habitat name etc like an appnice Usually has several good photos of each bird Videos are a great addition most are professional quality though some a bit short Internet connection required for videos Bird sounds included via the excellent xenocantoorg website Internet connection required and to Wikipedia article on the bird ditto Internet required to get the most from this app but the basic info is built in In all very well executed and includes full set of Frohawks large gorgeous paintings of Hawaiis extinct birds so sad by themselves worth the price of the app IMHO Dedicated Hawaii birders will still want their books for identifying rare migrants vagrants etc that are not included in this app but visitors should find most everything they need for a birding trip to the Islands even down to links to recommended professional guides Good reference for visitors
